The City has a legitimate, important role in promoting art in NB a. In city charter (?) 5. The City’s role is to be a supporter and convener of art in our community 6. The City Council has a responsibility to be fiscally prudent Future programming [slide 2 – not detail, just headers 1 and 2] 1. Continue existing successful activities: a. Supporting local organizations through grant making i. Festival Ballet ii. Backhausdance iii. Baroque Music Festival iv. Sherman Library, etc. b. Sponsoring signature events and series i. Pacific Symphony ii. Summer pop concerts iii. Art in the Park c. Enriching the community through public art i. Sculpture garden 2. Consider additional initiatives: a. Collaboration with local programs such as NB Film Festival and Hyatt Summer jazz series b. Partner with local art institutions such as NB Art Museum and Pacific Symphony c. Partner with local business such as Williams Sonoma d. Join the boat parade e. Produce programs with civic partners such as Parks and Rec and Library Foundation Paying for all this fun The CC, Arts Commission and community at large are mindful of the economic challenges facing NB. The unfunded pension liability is real. The CC must spend our money wisely. Public art is a good investment for the City, but we must be prudent. With that in mind, the CC will: [slide 3] 1. Direct the Arts Commission to utilize the funds allocated to public art from the General Fund and VNB on a current and on‐going basis. 2. Direct the Arts Commission to utilize the BPATF funds over a 3‐4 year period, with a preference for activities in Balboa. 3. Adopt a policy regarding the usage of funds in the Public Art and Facilities Fund (Policy I‐13), particularly with reference to funding of future phases of the sculpture garden. The Arts Commission has ambitions to increase the presence of art in NB. The commission believes that the funding for additional programs much come from a combination of public and private sources. The commission is prepared to begin working with NBAF and others to create a plan for engagement and fundraising. This process will necessitate dedicated staff support. This will not be a fast process. Informal Budget Request for 2016‐2017 [slide 4 ‐ current and future year budget] A final request – show your support of arts in NB. Come to a summer concert. Drink some wine at the food and wine festival. Dance and cook with us. And tell the commissioners what a great job they’re doing!
