F or Dennis Ambrose, boating
ttadition is serious business.
For 25 years, the 47-year-old
shipwright, or marine carpenter, has
owned his wood shop on the water on Lido
Peninsula. where he has restored old boats,
built tealc dedcs for luxury yachts and given
form to just about "any wood on a boat"
"For many people, boats are legacies
handed down from one generation to
another, .. be said "People like to keep it in
top condition. Its like a status symbol"
Ambrose's father was a marine carpenter,
too.

"There's no carving or right angles. .. he
said. "But everything in a boat w
ornamental -handrails, trims. Theres a lot
of curves and bends, too. Just no straight
necessary. One-day classes cost from $100

The tealc comes to Ambrose all the way
from the jungles of Myanmar, through a
supplier. In a year, he uses at least 5,000
square feet of teak on about 30 yachts.
"The time taken for each job varies," he
said "Some projects are long-term. like the
sportfisher we restored that took about a
year and a half."
Ambrose says the business is not "loo

skippered a recreadonal
yacht from Newport Beach
to Bnsenada, and the next
day, I skippered a different
yacht back to Newport
Hubor. On both trips, I
never saw a patrol~
near the international
border. and I observed many
boats aossing over the
border into the U.S. from
Mexico.
As I have mendoned.
every boat entedng the U.S.
is required to stop In San
Diego for U.S. Qistoms and
receive official Clearance for
the ~t and aew. Last
SUnday, while heading north.
I detoured my course to
enter San Diego Harbor and
dock at the San Diego Police
Dock for customs. Then I
had to walk up to the pay
pfione on land and dial -S2
to request a customs officer.
I was lucky as an officer
arrived in leM than an hour.
I could see at least half a
dozen other boats on similar
courses heading north from
Mexico, and only one other
boat stopped with us at
customs. The other vessels
just kept going, so why stop
If no one is checking?
It just seems strange with
the high terrorism alert that
anyone can easily penetrate
the border by water. Pius,
you have to go out of your
way to request an
inspection, with no one
verifying that a boat actually
stops at customs.
Back to my question: What
good is the additional
security at the landside
borde.r checkpoints when
you.can simply cross into the
U.S. by boat? Think about il

Diego.

The incidents were not con-
centrated in one area. but re-
portedly OCCUJTed all over the
dty -Paularino Avenue, Bristol
Street. Sunfiower Avenue, Maple
Avenue, Rose Lane, Monte Vista
Avenue, Canary Drive, Rosemary
Place and Labrador Drive. Five of
the incidents involved homes,
and four affected vehicles. Bir-
ney said.
The vandals also struck at dif-
ferent times of day, Birney said.
One victim in the 100 block of
Monte Vasta Avenue reported she
was sitting in her living room
watching television at about 7:50
p.m. Saturday when she heard
objects being thrown. She was
left with two broken windows.
Another victim reported that
he was in his car at the intersec-
tion of Bristol Street and SUn-
flower Avenue at about 11:45
p.m. Sunday when he heard his
tar window break and shatter,
police said. Several reported in-
ddent.s happened overnight
Birney said it is "hard to guard
against such incidents. where
malicious damage to property is
involved"

yards olf shore when the ac-
cident happened. ab.e said.
The 26-year-old woman
jumped off the boat and
tried to free the net, but was

Harbor Patrol depudes
responded to the call, ru-
cued the students and
brougbt them and the boat
ashore, she said.
"What made It cballeng-
ing was that there was a 3-
to 5-fool swell that ~Y. and
the wind was blowing cl<>se
to 20 blots," Maguire said.
The, woman was treated
for mild hypothermia and
released, she said.

"There's no rhyme or reason to
it,~ he said. "It's very natural for
people to be shocked or caught
off guard. What do you do when
you're enjoying a quiet evening
at home watching 1V and some-
one just drives by and breaks
your window'?"
Birney said that such incidents
almost always happen in a
"spree."
"These incidents don't happen
too often." he said. "But when
they do happen, it's a string of
incidents."
8.imey added that the objects
used to vandalize homes or cars
were as varied as baseball bats
and BB guns. but "there is a
strong possibility that they could
all be related."
Descriptions of the vandals
have also been hard to get be-
cause only two of the victims
even came close to catching a
glimpse of anyone, he said.

He said any help residents can

with Information that will help
us put an end to these inci-
dents."

Both are coming together in a
monitoring and mentoring pro-
gram at Bade Bay Alternative
High School in Costa Mesa. one
that appears to be the perfect
blend of give and take.
·1 think it's a win-win [situa-
tion)," said Debbie Davis, princi-
pal at Back Bay. "I think its excel-
lent for them to be willing to
share their skills with us and for
our students to get the extra
help, one on one."
About three yeMi ago, Syd Lu-
cas of the Newpon Beach Sun-
rise Rotary Oub helped organize
a program with Back Bay to help
its students. The program now
consists of about seven seniors
from the Rotary Oub and the
Oasis Senior Center who volun-
teer their time at the school by
tutoring students and assisting
teachers.
"Our students have felt very
positive about the tutors." Davis
said. "I think it helps [the tutors)
interact with the youth of today.
I th.ink it bridges a generation
gap for some of them.·

who have struggled at tradltional
high schools or are seeking an
atmosphere that will allow them

each entered the program with a
desire to reach out to the
younger generations.

fell like I shouJd give back to the
community what I got out of it,"
said 79-year-old Joe Edberg. a
retired mechanical engineer
who has been a part of the pro-
gram since the beginning. "I've
gotten a lot of pleasure out of
this. I give them what I know ...
I try to give them practicaJ ex-
perience.·
Giving their time and shariRg
their expertise has its rewards
and its challenges.
"The program's great, and Joe
dld help me out a lot," 18-year-
old Luis Marcial said. ·u means
a lot that he's giving up pan of
his time. He's showing me some-
thing bener than being on the
streets."
Nol only has intergenerational
tutoring shown Marcial another
path, it has inspired him to con-
sider participating in outreach
programs in the future.
From helping students with
math 10 helping teachers grade
papers, the senion. involved in
the program have found a niche
in the educational system that
allows them to be a part of the
educational process.
"I think that, in generaJ, there's
a lot of need in this country ...
and while I don't do much here,
it gives me a good feeling." said

to his stint as a weapons system
instructor in the Marines. "This
is something I can do a little bit,
maybe help out a little bit and
enjoy"

firm has said Emulex Corp. is
the top supplier of fiber chan-
nel adapters, with a 45% share
of that market.
The DeU'Oro Group, based in
Redwood City, Calif., included
the information in its annual
Storage Area Network Report
that was released Feb. 24.
The report said Emulex was
No. 1 in revenue, as well as In

Peirsol's "week oft" won't last as long
as he would want. He said he has been
keeping up to date and watching the
Texas men's basketball team, which
bas advanCled to the Final Four for the
first time since 1947. He would watch
the Longhorns this Saturday when
they face SyraClUSe, but Pelrsol will
compete in, "The Duel in the Pool,•
the U.S. vs. Australia meet which ls on
Saturday and Sunday in Indianapolis.
Pelrsol is being marketed as one of
the premier swimmers of the event that
will be televised by NBC April 12 and
Apdl 13. It might be di1ficuJt to
recognize Aaron. He cut his hair, which
used to be a bit of a tradmuuk It
loobd like be never combed it. yet his
curly bah added to his charm. Now he
has a Oat-top-like, dean-cut hairstyle.

afternoon. Corona del Mar HJgh's boys
and girls track teams looked to one an-
other.
After already posting stunning vic-
tories -the girls won, 121-0, while the
boys earned a 110-17 triumph -over a
depleted Laguna Beach squad in a Pa-
ciJic Coast League dual meet, the 1,600-
yard relay provided a smidgen of dnuI\a
on an otherwise relaxed lbunday after-
noon on the CdM trade.
With the quartet of Brian LaJ>erle,
Matt. Morris, Blake Dillion and Ouis
Ringstrom racing to a 4:13.3, the push
was on for second and was it dose with
the CdM boys and girls running along
side one another in the event.
Melis.5a Swigert -who anchored the
final leg of the 1,600 relay with Kinzie
Kramer, Lindsey Manning and Kelly
Morgan -burst ahead of J.C Turner at
the beginning of the final 400. But
Turner turned up the octane the final
100 yards alongside cheers from the re-
maining CdM faithfuJ and teammates
and barely beat Swigert.
"She was torching me and probably
would have won If she rudn't slow down
and talk to me on the back stretch," said
Turner, who ran in four events.
CdM Coach Bill Sumner knew Laguna
Beach was rebuildinfJ, but he aid he
didn't think Thursday's meet would be
as lopsided
"It makes it hard when you don't have
a track to compete on." Sumner said.
Laguna will have one meet at home this
season. but surrounding construction is
making the school's track a storage yard
for equipment, said first-year Laguna
Coach Paul Cook.
Sumner let athletes dabble in various
events, resting some in preparation for
Saturday's Orange County Thlck and
Field Championships at Thabuco Hills
High in Mission Viejo. Sara Oaster had
never run the 800 but picked it up
quick. taking first in i:29.9.
Caster, along with all runners Thurs-
day, dealt with a brisk wind that blew in
competitors' faces along the back
stretch of the track.
"It's like running Into a wall," said
Oaster of running against the wind.
Apologies to Bob Seager. "It motivates
you to go faster. The cold makes it
harder to keep the muscles warm.•
Not even the chilling wind could keep
many CdM runners cold on the track
