And despite the best efforts of grown-ups to use their ranting and raving to make this an about them, kids just want to have fun Win or lose, they will have Cun. But the parents who say rude things to umpires and come on with an attitude don't care about kids.. They only care about themselves and supporting their own fragile egos by trying to win games or blow off steam by belittling an authority figure. LETTER TO THE EDITOR ICE HOCKEY SPECIAL Strictly anti-.business I was disappointed by the CAsta Mesa City Councils decision Moo4ay night 10 overturn the Plannhlg Comm.is.5ion's 4· I approval of the Kohl's project at Mesa Verde Center. Not only was the verdict disappointing. but so to ~ the methodology and reason.Ing used by our dty leaders to reach their decision. At lhe City Council meeting Monday. Robinson would not be~ by Kohl~ arguments. In response to the fact that the project met the city's requirement for parking and traffic, she countered that these requirements did not reflect real life. Without commenting on why the city's own requirements were not ~tic. she went on to say that her dally conunute down Mesa Verde Drive was evidence enough that there was already too what was to be demolished, and still so.<XX>. square feet less than city mrung allows for the entire center. So what is •too much~ What size building Is acceptable? Does the applicant have a right to know'l Down the street. a 35,00G-square-foot 99 Cents Only Store as ~ to open. and Kohls is given the nm aroWld. The message is frightening. both for our property values and future of lhe city. An amazing start to .the playoffs The Mesa Verde Center in recent years lw lost the lee Chalet skating rink and the movie theater. The resulting empty building'S. combined with the decaying Kana lanes, tw aeated an eyesore and embarrassment for the neighborhood. For six years. the property owner anempted to attract entertainment uses to the site, but no companies were willing to make the investment at a site that had only seen failure. F'Ulally, the nation's klrg~1 department store chain, KohlS. advanced a plan to build a brand new department store on the site. lt is imponant to note that the project met every city zoning law in terms of building siz.e, parking and use. It was a retail use at a retail site, it had adequate paOOng. the building size was less than allowed and no traffic studies indicated any sort of traffic problem with the use. As you will see. the fact tPat. they complied with city reqyl.rements made little dilJereoce to our leaders. Mayor Karen Robinson acted swiftly to appeal the Planning Commissions approval of Kohls based on the over abundance of traffic she feared this use would bring. Her actions had a factual basis. Robinson had been inwlved in lWO recent problems invoMng oveiauwding. one at an apartment complex. the other at a nearby shopping center. Robinson naturally did not want to see the same problem here and filed her appeal. In response to the appeal. Kohl's revised the plan to provide more parldng than required and also paid for a traffic study to be conducted by the city's traffic consultant The study showed that the use would not tmduly burden the neighbomood's traffic fluw. much traffic. I was swprised, given the mayor's occupation as a lawyer, that she could nol offer any traffic studies or impact reports to back her conclusion. As it turned ovt. she didn't need any. as Councilmen Gary Monahan, Ouis Steele and Allan Mansoor fell in line and also voted against the proposal. Robinson was no doubt concerned about city traffic and what she felt was a growing imbalance in the types of uses found in Costa Mesa. She stated that. although Kohl's by itself was in compliance, the sum total of recenl development had created a problem. She failed to show by what measure there was now a problem. '])'affic studies by the city's own consuJtant could find no adverse affects. Our neighborhood is in walking distance to a 200-acre park. a 50-aae model train ride facility and a 200-acre 36 hole public golf course. How, l wondered, did a 10-acre retail development in an existing retail cen1er put us out of balance? I have no doubt that each of our council members is looking out for the best interests of the city's residents, and for that we should be thankful. But business is an important part of this city, too; not only for the city revmue they provide, but also the convenience it provides its residents. Is it fair that Kohls comes to town to rehabilitate a decaying center and after they spend precious time and money to meet every city requirement the council members simply say it is ~too much"? This in spite of the fact that the planned building was no bigger than Only Councilwoman Libby Cowan, a former planning commissioner, w1ed for the project. She stated that although she was not excited about the project, there was nothing in current zoning laws which would prohibit its use. She also explained that we live in an wbanized area where traffic is a way of life. This conunon sense seemed strangely out of plare Perhaps the residents who showed up at the meeting to wice their displeasure with the project swayed our city leaders. Of the 28 who spoke. 25 spoke against the project ln the end, all that mattered wa.o; that Robinson thought it WdS •too much." with nothing to back It up but her own personal experienc.es. The other ~ting council members could offer no conaete reasons or solutions. I am confused. If we are out of balance. what is the total acreage devoted to shopping, industrial and residential and what is desired? If we have too much traffic, what traffic counts are desired and what are the counts now? Perhaps Robinson is right. and if so. does that mean no new retail development is allowed? The shabby retail reflects poorty on nearby residential vaJues. If you don't believe me. take a drive through Santa Ana sometime. 'The ~anti-business· forces are now leading Costa ~ ls anyone out there concerned? The first three periods were certainly entert.aming enough, but the three overtime penods were the most exciting. As a goalie myself, l know the feeling of being in total control of my body. II this first game is any indication of what we are to see out of Giguere, then buckle up, because we are in for one heck of a ride. The regulation peri~ were well played by both reams. and the special teams were quite even. The Due~ played an intelligent game by keeping a good gap in the neutral zone. But again, and thic; is the great thing about hockey. anything can happen when the playoffs come around. I laving played in and been a part of an Anaheim team that look thew~ to overtimes in past playoffs, I lc:now this WdS the g-.une the team needed. The confidence tha1 the players gained from this win will enable them to beUew that they are capable of winning this series. Newport's Myi-ella Moses and Eric Mondriaan have been working .in tandem to produce mixed-media art for 12 years. By Suzie H•rrl1on Their work is like poetry, poetry on canvas where paint and sculpture replace the words, and a story unfolds before one's eyes without ever having to tum the page. It's a story to be read over and over, the kind that is hard to put down, get out of the rnJnd, one that becomes a part of oneself, as one becomes part of it and never let go. .. . United States. "I was dolng a show at Saddleback in the fall at Saddleback C.Ollege and 'fyter saw them and wanted lo use them ln thJs eihibit." Moses said. "I've.been working malnJy bn white sculpture for the last 10 lo 15 years." Moses. who has being doing artwort for a long time, started her white series ln 1985. Her solo piece at the Laguna exhibit is called "In the Mean Time," and she explained the piece as having a double entendre. The "Whiteness" exhibit Is the first time that Moses and Moodrtaan have shown their wort together. "It's doubly big to have this body of work that we did together and to have it validated in the mu.sewn show is huge," Moses said That's what happens when experiencing Myrella Moses and Eric Mondriaan's wort.. Its message and images hold onto to the attention of the viewer For 12 years, these Newport Beach artists have been wodting as a team, creating wort that has captured the attention of many. They have gained the attention of 'fyter Stallings, curator for Laguna Art Museum's exhibits, who having experienced their a.rt before, asked them to be the only Orange C.Ounty artists to exhibit in the wildly popular "Whiteness, A Wayward C.Onstruction." "Whiteness" is a group exhibition of 78 artworks that explore the identity, politics and culture of whltene& in the "There's a gun under a pillow and an African headrest with a btife underneath it." Moses said. "You can sit on it or sleep. Underneath the headrest I used sand from where Mandela stood in Pallna, South Africa" Their piece "'Wishing Well· is also a mixed-media piece. The sculpture has Imprints in the white part, Impressions of someone having lain on his stomach whlle using his finger to play with the water, a painted water vortex that whirls from its blue swface to the blaclcness inside to the unknown. One of the reasons Day has imp~ on her high jwnp mark is because the Costa Mesa girls track and field team bas added depth this season, Coach Glenn Mitchell said. The ~· added depth has allowed Day to focus more on the high jump. rather than attempt to collect points in various events. "She has not had to carry the team." Mitchell said of his star athlete. Mitchell also said Day has been enjoying herself this year and that. too, has helped lead the senior to success. Day helped lead the Mustangs to win the Golden West League title in volJeyball. and as the goal-scoring leader of the girls soccer team she led Costa Mesa to a share of its first CIF championship.
