HomeMy WebLinkAbout12/14/1925 - Adjourned Regular Meeting304 City Hall, Newport Beach, Dec. 14, 1925 The Board of Trustees -of the City of Newport Beach met in regular adjourned session on the above date at 7;30 o'clock P. M. The meeting was called to order by President George P. Wilson. The roll was called, showing the full Board present. The minutes of the pre- vious meeting were read, and having been amended, were approved. Trustee Richter reported that it was the recommendation of the Police ' Committee that in the matter of a car for the Police Department, that the old Dodge car be repaired and that no other car be purchased At this time. Upon motion of Trustee Wilkinson, seconded.by.Trustee Young, and carried, the recommendation of the Police Committee was accepted, and the Marshal instructed to have the Dodge Car repaired. Certain contracts for the Municipal Water Works completion were presented and the bonds being approved by the City Attorney, the President and Clerk were ordered to sign original and duplicate copies of the contracts, and the Clerk was ordered to return the certified checks of the bidders and duplicate contracts. ORDINANCE NO. 285. Trustee Sloan introduced an ordinance providing for the granting of permits in the City of Newport Beach for the maintenan of fish canneries and places where fish are to be reduced, provid- ing regulations under which said permits may be obtained, and under which such business shall be conducted, declaring all persons main- tained for any of such purposes without such permit shall constitute nuisances, and providing a penalty for all violations of such ordinance The Ordinance was ordered filed, read, considered, designated Ordinance No. 285, and referred to the City Attorney. This being the hour set for the opening of sealed bids for the improvement of certain portions of Central Avenue, more particular- ly described in Resolution.of Intention No, 348. The Board opened, read•, considered, and declared all sealed bids. Upon motion of Trustee Wilkinson, seconded by Trustee Sloan, and carried, all bids were referred to the City Engineer. On motion of Trustee Wilkinson, seconded by Trustee Sloan, and carried, the request of the Union Oil Co. for permit to build pier, bury fuel oil tanks, and_the construction of a station on Balboa Island was referred to the City Planning Committee and the City Engineer for investigation, report, and recommendationo on motion of Trustee Richter, seconded by Trustee Young, and carried, the.application of Ben Cope to construct a pier for Win - nifred Milner in front of Lot 156, Block A, East Newport Tract, was referred to the City Engineer for the usual.two weeks. An invitation was received from the Pageant of Light Commit- tee of Redondo Beach for the Board to attend the Pageant of Light Celebration to be held January 2, 1926. On motion of Trustee Wilkinson, seconded by Trustee young, and carried, the Clerk was ordered to acknowledge receipt of the com- munication and inform the Committee that if possible the Board would attent. A communication received from Fire Chief, A. W. Jackson, regarding the purchase of additional.equipment for the Fire Department was referred to the meeting.of the committee.as a whole., to be held at the home of Trustee Wilson, Wednesday, December 16, 1925, at 8 o1clock P. M., and the Clerk was ordered to invite Fire Chief Jackson to attend. 305 On motion of Trustee Wilkinson, seconded by Trustee Young, and carried, demands, as approved by the Finance Committee, were allowed and warrants ordered drawn. Advertising Manager, Harry Welch, appeared before the Board and explained what the cost would be on the renovation of the City Advertising Map. The matter was discussed, and it was decided not to enter the map in the Orange Show at San Bernadeno. ' On motion of Trustee Young, seconded by Trustee Wilkinson, and carried, the Advertising Manager was authorized to spend an ad- ditional $65.00 for prizes for the 151 Hydroplane Association races ;to be held Sunday, December 20, 1925. City Engineer, Kressly, reported his findings on bids for the improvement of certain portions of Central Avenue, and on motion of Trustee Wilkinson; seconded by Trustee Sloan, and carried, all bids were referred back to the City Engineer for one week for inves- tigation and report. City Engineer, Kressly, presented the Board of Trustees with an outline of vacation of certain portions of olive, . Streets, and certain alleys. The Engineer was instructed to inform the persons wishing the vacation, that the Board would grant their petition provided that a subdivision map of the change be filed. There being no further business, on motion of Trustee Wilkinson, seconded by Trustee Sloan, and carried the meeting was adjourned to 7 :30 o'clock P. M., Monday, December 21, 1925. Under reports of heads of departments, Trustee Sloan reported for the committee as a whole, that in the matter of a bond issue for the Fire Department, that a bond issue be voted on at the next general election in the amount of from .$25,000.00 to $30,000.00 for A new fire hall and fire equipment. The committee also reported that they were in favor of Pia -ying the $5.00 per man to each fire and that the fire department be allowed $1.00 per man, two practices each month. The raise of salary to take effect immediately.
