Dear Mr. Riordan:
The citizens of Newport Beach are disappointed to hear of what appears to be a
recent change of your position regarding a potential commercial airport at El
Toro, and we want to ensure we open a dialogue with you on this important
issue.
John Wayne Airport has a single 5,700 -foot long runway, the shortest of any
major commercial airport in California, while El Toro has two 10,000 -foot
runways and two 8,000 -foot runways. As you know, El Toro consists of 5000
acres, is surrounded by a 13,000 acre "no -home zone" and is served by seven
major freeways or tollways. Orange County simply doesn't have a site other
than El Toro to help JWA serve future air passenger demand.
This community hopes that, as an aspiring Gubernatorial candidate, your vision
for California includes providing the air transportation infrastructure necessary to
meet the future needs of the region, rather than advancing positions based on
political expediency. We look to your leadership on the unique opportunity El
Toro presents us.
Sincerely,
Homer L. Bludau
City Manager
