John Campbell's representative. 0 0 I * Provides one -on -one tutoring to any English- speaking individual who needs help Offers small group classes and workshops to enhance literacy skills and community integration Helps over 120 adult learners each year • Works with over 50 families per year in the Families for Litera program and ECRTR programs • Had over 3,000 volunteer hours logged in the first 6 months c FY 2007. In addition, learners logged almost 1,700 hours of study time with their tutors or in small group classes in this 6 -month period. Are a diverse group I• Want to succeed for themselves, their families, and their �comKunity • A real life example: Clara* — 42 years old Born in the Central America, Clara came to California 20 years ago. She has been working as a dental assistant in NB. In a recent performance review, her supervisor told her that her English skills were thwarting her career advancement. The office manager referred Clara to the central library for help. Clara went to the library that same day where she found her way to the literacy office. She has been working with a tutor for about 6 months and has already assumed new responsibilities at work. To assure Clara's confidentiality, her identity has been changed. In the first 6 months of FY 2007 our learners • met many goals including: • Read a book, magazine, or newspaper for the first time ■ • Got their first library cards • Ordered from a restaurant menu without assistance • 1 • Became U.S. citizen • Obtained a California driver's license • Community awareness Increased support New learning resources • Classroom space Volunteer tutors • (there is always a waiting list of adult learners!!!)
