Parks and Trees Divisions
December 1998 Activities Report
Park Division Activities
Staff continued coordinating construction projects regarding Bonita Canyon, Arroyo
Park, Bonita Creek Park Sewer Project, and the Harbor View Pool Expansion Project
with the Public Works Department.
2. Staff continued coordinating Phase II of the Green Acres Reclaimed Water Project,
with the Public Works Department. The Project will route reclaimed water to irrigate
Bonita Creek and Eastbluff Parks and several of the Jamboree Road medians.
3. Staff completed irrigation renovation and plant replacements at various sites.
• 4. The Peninsula Park Field Renovation Project is currently under a 60 -day maintenance
period by the contractor. Staff will be evaluating the maturity of the grass on the field
before the field is open to the public. A delay in use is expected due to various
construction problems and the cooler weather.
5. A California native coastal mix was hydroseeded on the slopes of Inspiration Point
for soil stabilization.
6. Aeration, fertilization, overseeding and top - dressing was performed on the Bonita
Creels Park football field as an ongoing effort to improve this sports facility.
7. The renovation of the Corona del Mar medians located at Pacific Coast Highway and
Marguerite Avenue was completed.
Upcoming Activities for January
1. The planting of replacement shrubs and ground covers will continue Citywide.
2. Staff will continue to monitor the Fletcher Jones Mitigation Site in the Big Canyon
area.
3. Staff will continue coordinating the annual control of rodents by contract services.
• 4. Aeration and top dressing will be performed at Lincoln Athletic Center.

• Tree Division Activities
During the month of December, 873 trees were trimmed, 42 trees were planted, 25 trees
were removed, 9 emergency calls were responded to regarding trees and the Urban
Forester received 224 tree maintenance requests.
1. The City tree- trimming contractor, West Coast Arborists, completed work at several
locations within the Spyglass, and Peninsula areas. This included the annual trimming
of palm trees in selected areas.
2. The Urban Forester coordinated the Citywide Sidewalk Replacement Program with
the General Services Department Concrete Supervisor. This involved the Urban
Forester inspecting City street trees as related to sidewalk repairs.
3. The removal of 25 trees and the planting of 28, 24" box parkway street trees was
completed as part of the Phase H reforestation process in the Harbor View Hills South
Homeowners Association.
4. The City Council on December 14 approved an extensive reforestation project in
conjunction with the Corona del Mar Business Improvement District (BID). The City
Council approved $35,000 to match the $35,000 that BID has committed to the
removing of 60 Ficus parkway street trees and replanting of replacement King Palms
• and Hong Kong Orchid trees. The project is tentatively scheduled to begin in the
middle of January.
5. The windstorm of December 16 resulted in a 50 foot Eucalyptus parkway street tree
falling on a house at 2121 Windward Lane. Significant damage occurred to the
structure, but no one was injured at the residence.
6. The City Council policy G -1 requires that 30 days advance notification be made to
the Commission prior to any tree removals. The following location is recommended
for tree removal:
a. 1734 Santiago Drive — Remove one Canary Island Pine tree due to the close proximity
of the tree next to a City street light pole. The City Electrician has submitted the request
for the tree removal. His concern is that a major liability exists because of the potential
for the tree to cause the light pole to fracture and fall.
