Monthly Activities Report COMMUNITY SERVICES DEPARTMENT • Arts Et Cultural - Library - Recreation - Seniors To: Parks, Beaches and Recreation Commission From: Andrea McGuire, Senior Recreation Manager Re: Recreation Division Monthly Activities Report INFORMATION (Item 3) October 3, 2000 Maternity Leave - Christine Peart, Recreation Coordinator, is on maternity leave until January 2, 2001. Her duties are being completed by increasing hours for the part time Recreation Coordinator, David Hughes and Sr. Recreation Leader Kasey Canale. ADULT SPORTS Softball - The fall softball leagues began the week of September 11 with 96 teams competing in 17 different leagues. Games are being played at Bonita Creek Park and Lincoln Athletic Center. Players are anxiously awaiting the opening of renovated Grant Howald Park, which will also see league play, beginning October 9. Pending rain delays, • the fall softball leagues will wrap up by December 14. Basketball -The fall basketball leagues also started the week of September 11 with a total of 66 teams are competing in 10 different leagues. This program relies on approximately 25 officials and scorekeepers who are contracted to keep the highly skilled leagues organized. The "A" division features several NBA and Division I NCAA players. The "recreation" level leagues feature many company sponsored teams such as attorney firms, stockbrokers, and restaurants. Fall basketball leagues will conclude on November 30. YOUTH PROGRAMS Youth Sports Commission - Fall Youth Sports are currently underway with the main season for youth soccer, basketball and football, along with traveling teams for Bobby Sox, Little League, and Pony and club teams such as the Waves and Slammers. There are approximately 4,500 youth in co- sponsored fall sports. Flag Football - Recreation staff is on site at each of the seven Newport Beach elementary schools coordinating the flag football program. Sixteen teams play together as a league, which begins September 29 and ends November 18. Each participant in the flag football program strengthens their physical skills and learns how to work as a team. All games are scheduled at Bonita Creek Park due to the renovation of Grant Howald Park. • Kids Club /KidScene - School is back in session and the Kids Club and KidScene programs are in full operation. The Community Services department has placed three recreation leaders at Newport Heights, Mariners and the Community Youth Center to conduct recreational activities such as games, crafts and sports daily, from 2:30- 5:30pm. The program is free to children in grades 1 -6. Monthly Activities Report (Item 3) October 3, 2000 Punt, Pass and Kick - The Community Services Department recently hosted the local •competition for the NFL - Gatorade Punt, Pass and Kick competition. In total, 57 children, ages 8 -15, participated in the event. Winners in each age group advance to the section competition to be held on October 29 in Fountain Valley. AQUATIcs Lap Swim - During the summer months 163 swim classes /lessons were taught with a total of 921 swimmers enrolled. Annual Swim Passes purchased totaled 11 and 23 Punch Passes were purchased. Adult Fitness Lap Swim has had between 20 and 40 swimmers nightly. Water Polo - NBAC Junior Water Polo with Coach Ted Bandaruk has games scheduled at Marion Bergeson Aquatics Center on September 24, 28, 30, and October 5, 7, 12, 14 and 21. The NCAA Water Polo tournament was held at the Marion Bergeson Aquatics Center with attendance of over 1,000 each day. Donald J. Dorr, a volunteer with the Newport Water Polo Foundation, ran the tournament in cooperation with UCI. Over 50 volunteers worked to help the event run as smoothly as it did. University of Southern California beat Stanford in the Championship Game. Lifeguard Staff members Shawna Hughes and Matt Traum assisted in treating an injured Water Polo Player from the Naval Academy Team. • SPECIAL EVENTS Surf Contest - A 3 -5 foot south swell welcomed the 211 surfers participating at the 8th Annual Newport Pro -Am Surf Contest at 56th Street Beach , September 14 - 16. A crowd of 500 spectators was in attendance each day of competition, cheering the spectacular wave riding skills of the contestants. Added to the program this year were women's and girl's divisions with competitors ages 8 to 40. Sponsors of the event included Rusty, Smith Sunglasses, Surfside Sports, Wahoo's Fish Taco and Surfing Magazine. Corona del Mar 5K Artwork - A call for art for the 20th Annual Corona del Mar Scenic 5K was sent throughout the community. Ten artists responded with a sample of their work, which included paintings of CdM landmarks such as Inspiration Point, Little Corona and the footbridge. The committee, comprised of Corona del Mar chamber members and other community leaders, is expected to select an artist by October 1. Halloween Window Painting Contest - The Community Services Department has partnered with Madison Marquette Retail Services to bring the inaugural Halloween Window Painting Contest to Newport Beach on October 29. Approximately 200 storefront windows throughout the City will be painted on that day (October 29, 2000) in traditional Halloween theme. This event is anticipated to bring many families, merchants and spectators together to experience a sense of community in Newport Beach. Participants may register • for painting sites until the window spaces are sold out. Monthly Activities Report FACILITIES MAINTENANCE (Item 3) October 3, 2000 • Recreation Facilities Et Playground Assessment - Takata and Associates has been retained to start this assessment of other outdoor recreation facilities to have a comprehensive evaluation of existing facilities and possible capital improvement projects for the future. A reminder that the Facility Inspection Reports are due the first week in November. PARK DEVELOPMENT Arroyo Park - project is proceeding. Verbal report will be presented at the Commission meeting. Bonita Canyon Sports Park - project is still on schedule. Staff continues to attend weekly construction meetings. Verbal report will be presented at the Commission meeting. Grant Howald Park - The Parks Division of General Services has assumed maintenance of the newly renovated field. Play should begin on October 9. The backstop fence is being replaced and new dugout benches and bat racks have been ordered. This infield is the first using a new product called "Stabilizer Red ", which promises to be more maintenance free than the traditional brickdust used in the past. • The Recreation Division would like to thank Public Works and General Services Departments for their cooperation and diligence on this project. CONTRACT CLASSES /INSTRUCTION Summer Session - The summer season of classes enrolled a total of 4,519 participants, up by 9% from 1999. Revenue for the summer season classes was $362,308. Fall Session - Fall classes began September 18 with over 1,600 people registered to date. Winter Session - Class information is currently being gathered for the winter Newport Navigator scheduled to go to print on November 8 and distributed to residents of Newport Beach on December 7. • Monthly Activities Report (Item 3) October 3, 2000 COMMUNITY SERVICES DEPARTMENT • Arts & Cultural - Library - Recreation - Seniors TO: Parks, Beaches and Recreation Commission From: Celeste Jardine -Haug, Senior Services Manager Re: Seniors Division Monthly Activities Report Ballroom Dancing, - The OASIS staff are reevaluating the free Friday afternoon dances at the Center which have been an OASIS tradition for over 20 years. The band has encountered illnesses and deaths and has lost many of the volunteer core that has held this group of musicians together. Trumpet player Charlie Ecclestone, 91 years old, has played with the band every Friday for the past 22 years. Willard Courtney, 85 years old, says he would like to be able to travel a tittle with his wife. The staff and the Friends of OASIS are very appreciative for all their hard work and dedication of these volunteers that made these Friday Dances so special. Beginning in October, the remaining band members will reconvene, with a small charge for the Friday Dance to pay for the band's services. It is hoped that the dancers will continue to support this activity with the added small participation fee. •HICAP Lecture - The Health Insurance Counseling and Advocacy Program will provide the Center with a lecture on HMO's on Wednesday, October 25 at 1:00 p.m. Participants will be able to sort out which type of health plan is best for them and have their concerns about the HMO system answered. HICAP is a non - profit insurance advocacy group. Jazz Concert - The night Blooming Jazzmen returned for yet another popular engagement on Sunday, September 24 at 2:00 p.m.. The Sunday Jazz concerts usually sell out at 400 people. The Friends of OASIS subsidize the concerts and therefore the ticket prices are kept to a minimum of $4.00 for members and $6 for non - members. Pancake Breakfast Returns - The monthly pancake breakfasts resume this Saturday at OASIS. The breakfast, at $2 for adults and $1 for children, is a fundraiser for the Friends of OASIS and staffed by volunteers of all ages. The event has been a tradition in Corona del Mar for the past twenty years. Candidate's Forum - The OASIS Center will be holding a candidate's forum, Friday, October 6 at 10:30am. The forum is open to the public, however the majority of the audience will be older adults and interested in issues that affect seniors.
