Why Change?
• The proposed change would establish a salary range for the Assistant City Attorney from $151,132 (the current
bottom step for the Assistant City Attorneys Position) to $236,766.40 (the current top step for the Assistant City
Manager Position). No salary change would automatically be implemented as a result of the establishment of a
salary range. Any future adjustments would take into account the salaries of other City employees as well as the
salaries of other attorneys in similar positions at other cities.

Ultimately, the net cost to the City of Newport Beach should
decrease because the reliance on outside counsel to handle
matters will be reduced.
The Fiscal Year 2017-18 budget for the City Attorney's Office
will reflect a reduction in the outside counsel budget to offset
the personnel costs associated with this proposed change
resulting in a net neutral budget for next fiscal year.
