I have grown to know and appreciate the hard work that our Animal Control Officers do on a daily basis and the struggles they have faced trying to find clean, safe places to keep the stray animals found on the streets of our beautiful and affluent community. Some of the officers have even taken it upon themselves to care for animals at their homes and local vets, including myself have donated time and space in our hospitals in efforts to separate animals from outbreaks of disease when other shelters were "shared" and poorly managed. In a tight -knit, animal loving community such as ours, I find it difficult to believe that we cannot find enough funding or support for a beautiful, well -staffed animal shelter to rival Irvine Animal Care Center. I will gladly offer my services anytime to help solidify this project, which should be board run by prominent interested community members. Thank you for hearing my suggestions. If you have any questions please call 650-455-5560 Or email me at catvet02@gmail.com Thank -you, Dr. Kelly M Wright Received After Agenda Printed February 14, 2017 Item No. 9 From: Kiff, Dave Sent: Monday, February 13, 2017 9:27 AM To: City Clerk's Office Siab,;act: FaAr: Neuiipart /lnimai-Shelter For the record -----Original Message ----- From: Cynthia Talbott [mailto:cmnjt@me.com] Sent: Saturday, February 11, 2017 7:12 PM To: Dept - City Council <CityCouncil@newportbeachca.gov> Subject: Newport Animal Shelter Dear Council Members - I am writing to support the continuation of the Newport Beach Animal Shelter on Riverside Drive. it is such an important community service to have such an animal shelter facility in our own neighborhood rather than farther away in Huntington Beach. As promised, some of us have been working to get a non-profit organization up and running so as to make it a true collaboration with the City to provide the necessary funding for the purchase of this facility and ongoing associated costs. Tim Stoaks has enthusiastically taken the lead on getting a Board of Directors identified and the process of setting up the non-profit organization underway. This is all happening and I feel confident that very soon we will have the IRS approval for tax deductible donations and can begin fund raising in earnest. The initial Directors have pledged the necessary funds to get this organization up and running. You'll be seeing the remit envelopes circulating soon to the myriad of other animal lovers in Newport Beach. Hopefully you have all seen this shelter and realize, as I did, that it is a perfect opportunity with very reasonable costs, to provide something Newport badly needs and the animals and their owners or adopters deserve. You can't help but be impressed with the level of tender loving care that your staff and volunteers give to these animals - and especially in comparison to any other options that are available at this time. To provide this shelter is just plain the right thing to do. Thanks so much for giving us the opportunity to do the right thing - by extending the lease at this time. Unfortunately due to previous commitments, I will be unable to attend the City Council meeting but I wanted to share my support for extending our city's lease for the Animal Shelter. I would like our city of Newport Beach to continue to operate our own shelter right here in Santa Ana Heights rather than in Huntington Beach. I think it is important because our animals live here in our city with us and should be treated as citizens since they are like our children to us. Sending them to another city that might not care as much about another city's animals as we do, is not what I would like to see happen. This is especially important due to the major coyote problem we have in Dover Shores. I won't even walk my dogs at night anymore because I've seen coyotes hiding in between cars and then sauntering in the middle of the street, checking our my pets. I see notes almost daily about our missing pets - hopefully they just got lost and someone has sent them to our shelter and not something else happening to them. I intend to support the non-profit support group that is in the process of being formed. I intend to support our Animal Shelter both financially and as a volunteer as needed. Please make sure that we keep our very important Animal Shelter here in Newport Beach and not let our animals be bused out of town. Hopefully you will appreciate and support the efforts of our non-profit group so we can extend the lease of our city's Animal Shelter. Thank you for listening to my concerns.
