Ocean Piers Maintenance Project - Award of Contract
• Balboa Pier was built in 1906 and Newport Pier was built in 1940.
Major Renovation was in 2002; inspection and maintenance every 2
years and as needed.
• Maintenance work for the current project: replace pile straps,
replace bolts, replace timber bracing, timber splices, shims
• Majority of the work and cost are repairs and installations of pile
wraps and pile encapsulations.
• Additional contingency work for recent damage and other items
that maybe found during the construction.

Ocean Piers Maintenance Project - Award of Contract
• Only received one bid while 11 prime contractors were tentative
bidders. Historically, we have received between 1 to 3 bids per
project for this type of specialty work.
• Engineers Estimate was based on estimates. Low bid is higher
than estimate but appears to be within marketplace conditions.
• Award construction contract to the lowest bidder John S. Meek
Company Inc. for a bid of $1,182,395.00
• The construction will be thru the winter and dependent on
weather and tide conditions.
