HomeMy WebLinkAbout09 - Citywide Tree Maintenance Services with Great Scott Tree Service, Inc. (C-5648) - CorrespondenceReceived After Agenda Printed March 12, 2019 Item No. 9 From: Dawn Thompson [mailto:juliusrealtycorp@gmail.com] Sent: Tuesday, March 12, 2019 9:13 AM To: Dept - City Council <CityCouncil@newportbeachca.gov> Subject: Vote Tonight To Whom It May Concern, The community has been made aware Item 9 on the agenda tonight — the vote regarding Great Scott Tree Service funding. I speak for several members of our community, as well as myself, when I say that we are outraged by these "Tree Butchers" who have illegally performed damaging "lion tail cuts" under the cover of darkness much to the outrage of our community. We ask that the Great Scott Tree Service contract terminated permanently as of tonight. Please further note, several neighbors are prepared to make an issue of the City's breech of the "Special Tree" ordinance. The discussion ensued as follows: "Marine Avenue trees have been designated by the City as "Special Trees" of historic significance and can only be removed under extreme circumstances. It has been suggested to me that the trees are being deliberately mismanaged so that they will fail and have to be removed. If so, is the City aware that its own ordinance requires that any "Special Trees" must be replaced with the same species? Apparently not since the City is already in non-compliance since they have replaced Eucalyptus trees with other species including Ginkgo Biloba and African Tulip trees. Fittingly, these trees were poor choices and are failing. They should be removed and replaced with Lemon Gum Eucalyptus to comply with City ordinance." These matters are of significant importance to the residents of what was once known as "Tree City USA". Please do the right thing and terminate Great Scott Tree Service, and replace with a qualified service which adheres to our City Ordinance, and replace the non-compliant trees with the proper ones. Did you get other bids? Who suggested this proposal? Don't let staff or outsourced vendors run our City. Question them and each other on every single issue There's no reason that there could not be several tree trimming vendors working for the City.
