The meeting was called to order by President George P. '.:xilson. The roll was called showing the full Board present. The minutes of the nre- vious meting were read and apnroved. Communications were read and.referred to the proper order of business. Under reports of heads of departments, the President of the Board reported that the matter of the water Superintenlent's raise in salary, the Fire Chief matter of the pull motor squad and the request of George Varnum for a floating hotel off the Newport tier were continued in the hands of the committee as a whole for one -:reek, and in the matter of a lease to Yr. E. E. Rittenhouse for the exclusive concession for renting beach umbrellas, etc., the President reported that it was the report of the committee as a whole that this concession be not grafted. A subdivision map was presented of.Tract 'To. 536 within the City of Newport Beach for the approval of the Board of Trustees, howeve =, the streets not bein.- fully vacated, it was de- cided not to act upon the acceptance of the tract until final ordin- ance of the abondpnment had been passed. City Engineer Kressly reported on the bids which :;ere referred to him at the meeting of February 1, 1926. The matter of the purchase of a deep well turbine nump .-:as discussed, bidders were heard, and upon motion of Trustee ':'ilkinson, seconded by Trustee Young, and carried, the bid of the F. J. Kimball Co. of Los _ngeles; of ; 323 NOES -- Trustees, None ABSENT -- Trustees, None In the matter of the purchase of a 50 horse power engine, both the bids for gas and diesel engines were considered, bidders were heard, and on motion of Trustee ';!ilkinson, seconded ' by Trustee Sloan, and carried, it was ordered that the 50 horse power natural gas engine of the type called for in notice to bid- ders be awarded to the vrostern machinery Company of Los Angeles, that all other bids be Dejected and checks returned to the bidders. In the matter of the purchase of a 125 horse power full diesel engine, the Board of Trustees considered all bids, bid- ders were heard, it was moved by Trustee Sloan and seconded by Trus- tee Young that the bid of the Rodger Bros. Compan,T for 125 horse porter full diesel r,:ianus engine 6 cylinder for the amount of ^11, 185.74, be accepted and that all other bids be rejected and checks returned to the bidders, thereupon, the roll was called and the motion passed by the following vote to -wit: AYES -- Trustees Sloan, Young and Richter •;OAS -- Trustees Wilson, and 1.7ilkinson ABSENT-- Trustees None. On motion of Trustee Young, seconded by Trustee Sloan, and carried, the application of Ben Cope to construct a pier on Lot 4, Block 11, Section 1, Balboa Island having been laid over for two weeks and being approved by the City Engineer was grant- ed subject to the will of the Board. On motion of Trustee ':Jilkinson,.seconded by Trus- tee Sloan, and carried, the transfer of license No. 502 from Joe Rush to A. Nanmion was allowed and the transfer ordered. Applications were received from Ben Cope for the construction of a vier for George'D. tnd- Nellie E. (Roffman in front of Lot 10, Tract 26 of Fewrport Beach. And for the construction of a nier for H. J. Bauer in front of Lots 1 and 2 of Block 24, east Side atdition of Balboa Tract. There being no objections the mat- ter was referred to the city Engineer for the usual two weeks. An application was received from E. J. Bishop to construct a pier in front of Lot 19, Block 14, Section 4 of Balboa Island, there being no objections, the matter was referred to the city 3ngineer for the 'usual two weeks. A petition, siSned by 9 prooerty owners in that vicinity was presented for the construction of a pier at the end of Fernando Street. It was proposed that the property owners should pay half the construction expense, and that the City of Newport Beach should pay half, and that the pier should be used for mun- icipal purposed, cost of said pier was estimated to be :)625.00. There being no objection, the matter was referred to the City en- gineer for the usual two weeks and the Board of Trustees indicated their willingness to drove the petition. ' On motion of Trustee '•Iilkinson, seconded by Trus- tee Young, and carried, the resignation of the City Clerk to be- come effective Uarch 1, 1926 was referred to the committee as a whole. v A communication was received from E. J. ?:irks, judge of the Juvenile Court in regard to the posting of proper speed signs through the business district of the City. There be- 324 in.- no objections, the matter was referred to the City L:arshal for investigation and report. On motion of Trustee ';!ilkinson, seconded by Trustee Sloan, and carried, the demands as approved by the Finance Committee were allowed and warrants ordered drawn. City Attorney Bishop reported to the Board of Trus- tees that there had been '31500.00 on deposit at the Orange County Title Company for several years to take up the bonds on the property of the gas company, thereupon, the Clerk was instructed to get in touch with the people who owned the bonds and see if the date of maturity on the bolds could not be advanced. On motion of Trustee Sloan, seconded by Trustee Young, and ca =ried, the President and Clerk•we-re authorized to sign a lease for three pipe crossings over the Pacific Electric right of way, said lease to be $3.00 a ,year. On motion of Trustee Sloan, seconded by Trustee Young, and carried, the application of Stroud Bros. & Seabrook for a 60 day extension on their contract was granted. I.Ir. J. A. Porter, City Treasurer, requested the City Attorney to draw a form of notice for advancing maturity date on Sewer and paving bonds in connection with moneys of deposit de- rived from interest advanced by persons paying off sewer and paving liens. I,Ir. Porter stated that there was enough money in the treasury to take up at least one bond. There being no further business, on motion of Trustee Sloan, seconded by Trustee 7.ilkinson, and carried, the meeting was adjourned to February 15, 1926;7:30 o'clock P. I5. A letter was presented to the board which had been addressed to Ir:rs. I:arie A. Bernhard from Carnegie Hero Fund Com- mission in regard to an act of heroism which was performed by her hus- band on 1 %y 21, 1925, in which he lost his life. The city clerk was• ordered to send the Carnegie Fero Fund Commission all available data on the drowning of I.:r. Bernhard and a certified copy of the minutes of the meeting of the board in which they recoi:miended an endowment for :rs. Pernhard. This being the hour set for the opening of bids one
