DATE: November 26, 1990 X x x x x x x ROLL CALL. CURRENT BUSINESS: 1. The Mayor extended the floor to outgoing Council Member Strauss. Council Member Strauss congratulated Council -elect John W. Hedges on his victory for District No. 1; expressed appreciation and gratitude to the City Clerk, City Attorney, City Manager, and Department Heads for the assistance given him the past 12 years, and to the public for their loyal support. He also thanked the City Council for electing him as Mayor, and the opportunity to serve with them. NEW BUSINESS: 1. The City Clerk administered the Oath of Office to the newly elected /re- elected nW 2 W u� Council Members; presented each with a W O W Certificate of Election; after which a 2 p rah x H they took their seats at the Council H m a x x g table. 2. Proposed resolution declaring results of the Municipal Election, November 6, 1990. x Motion was made to adopt Resolution No. Res 90 -118 90 -118 declaring the results of the Municipal Election Consolidated with the State -wide Election held on November 6, 1990. ELECTION OF MAYOR: 1. Council Member Plummer nominated Council Member Sansone for Mayor. WW O W Hearing no other nominations, the nominations were closed, and Council Wa Z w rah H Member Sansone was declared as the new F W U: M x U 3 Mayor by unanimous vote. x 2. Proposed resolution authorizing Mayor's monthly allowance pursuant to Section 404 of the Newport Beach City Charter. Notion was made to adopt Resolution No. Res 90 -119 90 -119, authorising an allowance of $358.21 per month to the Mayor. Volume 44 - Page 392 • r1 • CITY OF NEWPORT BEACH o '� November 26, 1990 MINUTES OF MAYOR PRO TEM: Mayor Sansone nominated Council Member Turner for Mayor Pro Tem. Hearing no other nominations, the nominations were closed, and Council Member Turner was declared the new Mayor Pro Tem by unanimous vote. Mayor Sansone presented outgoing Mayor Plummer with a gavel mounted plaque in honor of her service the past year. Mayor Sansone thanked former .Council Member Strauss for the assistance and guidance he gave him as a "freshman" Council Member. Council Member Cox also expressed appreciation to former Council Member Strauss,, stating he has the highest regard for Don's integrity, his conduct as a gentleman, his constructive attitude, and that his contributions will be missed. Council Member Hart stated she has enjoyed working with "gentleman Don" Strauss for the past 12 years and will miss him, but she also is looking forward to working with Council -elect John Hedges on the new challenges facing the City. Mayor Pro Tem Turner in commenting on Don Strauss's service to the City, stated that many of his feelings have already been expressed by other Council Members; however, he did want. to add that he felt Don did a great job as a Council Member and he has really enjoyed working with him the past four years. He also is looking forward to serving another four years on the Council, and thanked those who re- elected him to office. Council Member Watt stated she has only served on the Council two years, but has enjoyed serving under the direction of former Mayors Don Strauss and Ruthelyn Plummer, and is also looking forward to new input from Council -elect John Hedges. Council Member Hedges expressed appreciation to Don and Dorothy Strauss for their many years of devoted service to the City, emphasizing the importance of a supportive spouse. He stated he wants to remain accessible and responsive as a Council Member and requested the minutes reflect his address as P.O. Box 782, 92661, and telephone number 675 -5185. He, too, is looking forward to working with the Council and City staff. 9. Council Member Plummer stated that she really has enjoyed serving as Mayor the past year, and what made it - BO delightful and rewarding, was partially due to the responsive and cooperative City staff. She stated this past year was full of surprises, challenges, and was also alot of fun, i.e., the oil spill, airport noise policy, ocean front encroachments, professional bicycle race at Fashion Island, her trip to Okazaki, Japan, as well as visits to Newport Beach from Sister Cities Antibes, France, and Okazaki, Japan. She briefly discussed regional problems the City will be facing, and stated she felt great progress has been made in working with other cities on the common problems. She stated that the City has always worked as a "team ", and she is very happy to be a member of that team.
