HomeMy WebLinkAbout11 - Sculpture Exhibition in Civic Center Park — Phase V - PowerPointNEWPORT BEACH CIVIC CENTER SCULPTURE EXHIBITION PHASE V FINALISTS SUMMARY March 10, 2020 Item No. 11 PROCESS • Call For Artists launched on November 15th, 2019, with a submission deadline of January 151h,2020. • Call was disseminated through public art networks, California Arts Council, directly to artists and galleries, and promoted through social media networks and listing services. Over 30 outlets in all with visibility in the hundreds of thousands of impressions. • 61 submissions were officially received, including works from 8 foreign countries and 14 U.S. states. 28 artists are based in California, 8 of them in Orange County. • 7 Members of Arts Commission plus 2 outside jurors voted on all works in consideration. After preliminary review of eligibility, 52 works were presented in an advisory public poll, where voters could designate up to three favorites. The poll logged 2,343 accepted votes from 1,084 individual voters. Voting closed on February 71h,2020. • High -scoring works from the jury, public poll, or both, were combined into a list of 25 Finalist candidates for closer scrutiny at the Arts Commission's Feb. 13th meeting. At this meeting, after open discussion, public input, and advisory information from installation experts, the Arts Commission identified 10 Recommended Selections and 3 Alternates. SELECTION CRITERIA Artistic Merit: • Artwork is of high-quality and demonstrative of originality and artistic excellence • Artist has strong professional qualifications Durability: • The artwork is be made of high-quality materials which can withstand the natural outdoor elements of coastal Southern California • Artwork requires minimal to no maintenance Practicality: • Artwork is of appropriate subject matter for audiences of all ages • Artwork is safe and shall not exhibit unsafe conditions or factors that may bear on public liability Site appropriateness: • Artwork is suitable in scale to be seen in environment • Artwork is suitable for viewing from all angles • Artwork will be an appropriate addition to the current collection JUDGES Arts Commission Members Arlene Greer, Commission Chair Marie Little, Vice Chair Michelle Bendetti, Secretary Miriam Baker Maureen Flanagan Wayan Kaufman Ritch LeGrand Outside Jurors David Michael Lee Curator/Director, Coastline Art Gallery Tyler Stallings Director, Frank M.
