HomeMy WebLinkAbout18 - Novel Coronavirus (COVID-19) Update - NoticeNOTICE OF CLOSURE BALBOA PIER AND NEWPORT PIER WHEREAS, as part of the State of California's response to address the global COVID-19 outbreak, on March 4, 2020, Governor Gavin Newsom declared a State of Emergency to make additional resources available, formalize emergency actions already underway across multiple state agencies and departments, and help the state prepare for the broader spread of COVID-19; WHEREAS, in response to the COVID-19 crisis, City Manager Grace Leung, the Director of Emergency Services for the City of Newport Beach, issued a Proclamation of Local Emergency ("Proclamation") on March 15, 2020; WHEREAS, on March 18, 2020, the City of Newport Beach City Council ratified the Proclamation and authorized the City Manager to take certain actions to protect the health safety and welfare of the public; WHEREAS, given the State of Emergency declared by Governor Gavin Newsom, the City of Newport Beach, and other coastal cities, have seen an influx of people using City of Newport Beach facilities such as the Newport Pier and Balboa Pier, where social distancing is not being maintained; and WHEREAS, to protect the safety of persons and property from the COVID-19 crisis, it is necessary to close the Newport Pier and Balboa Pier to maintain social distancing and help prevent the spread of COVID-19. NOW, THEREFORE, I, GRACE LEUNG, City Manager for the City of Newport Beach and Director of Emergency Services hereby order that the Newport Pier and Balboa Pier be closed from March 25, 2020 at 5:00 a.m. until April 8, 2020 at 5:00 a.m. ("Closure Period), unless this Closure Order is withdrawn by the filing a notice of rescission with the City Clerk prior to the end of the Closure Period. This Closure Order shall not apply to employees of the Ruby's Diner on the Balboa Pier while they are working. Date: March 24, 2020 GRA LEUNG, City Manager and Director of Emergency Services
