Hello, I am a student at Orange Coast College and I want to state my support for the trash - wheel project. I enjoy surfing at the Santa Ana River Jetty and walking in the Newport Bay. I feel that the trash wheel will make such activities safer and more enjoyable. Thanks. Sincerely, Matt Sereno Received After Agenda Printed March 24, 2020 Agenda Item No. 7 From: Bianca Brandi To: City Clerk"s Office Subject: Newport Bay Trash Wheel Date: Monday, March 23, 2020 4:16:05 PM [EXTERNAL EMAIL] DO NOT CLICK links or attachments unless you recognize the sender and know the content is safe. Good afternoon, I would first like to start by saying I wish you the very best of health and happiness during these confusing times. My name is Bianca Brandi, I am a 20 -year-old college student and the current Vice President of Voluntary Service for Phi Theta Kappa, an internationally recognized 2 -year Honor's Society, at Orange Coast Community College. I have been coordinating my institution's Help Your Harbor events, where I gather some 12-20 volunteers from my campus and help clean the trash from Newport Bay. Every first Saturday of each new month since October, we have collectively recognized how incredibly full of garbage our bay is and how every venture into the bay is just a never- ending, uphill battle as we try our hardest to collect as much trash as possible before it washes away into the ocean permanently. Some of the objects I have personally found in the hundreds are: tennis balls, straws, plastic bottles, water bottles, Gatorade bottles, milk jugs, hair product bottles, hand sanitizers, an incredible amount of styrofoam, clothing items, blankets, plastic bags, bottle caps, needles, canisters, redundant plastic toys, chip bags, plastic cups, and plastic packaging to name a few. As our current social condition ascertains the immediate consumption of massive amounts of products with plastic packaging due to the unfortunate pandemic hysteria, one of my greatest fears is the mounds of trash that will soon overwhelm the trash collecting systems, presumably multiplying the current amount of garbage that will undoubtedly make its way through the bay and into the ocean. Right now, we have an opportunity to help alleviate the impact that trash may have on our beautiful ocean and it's wild life by implementing the Newport Bay Trash Wheel. Down the road, once the lockdown restrictions have been lifted and the world rushes back to the beaches, I believe everyone deserves the right to look fondly upon a cleaner ocean thanks to the great help of a few more volunteer excursions and our local government. Below, I have attached a few pictures of our experiences cleaning the bay. Our oceans will thank us for our contributions and hopefully, more will soon follow this courageous effort to keep the bays clean! Warm regards, - - -1 21 mm:: I — 9-ftA 41 7 .
