HomeMy WebLinkAboutF-8f - New Programs at Oasis CenterC62 April 27 1981 CITY COUNCIL AGENDA ITEM NO. - k) .r r ;?y TO: MAYOR AND CITY COUNCIL FROM: Recreation Superintendent SUBJECT: NEW PROGRAMS AT OASIS CENTER Two new programs have recently been added to the many already available at Oasis Center for older adults in the Newport Beach and Corona del Mar area. The Junior Auxiliary of the Assistance League is co -sponsoring the "Vial of Life" program with the City of Newport Beach and the Friends of Oasis. This unique program makes vital emergency medical information available to Police officers, paramedics and ambulance attendants who respond to an emergency. A small plastic vial is provided for storage of emergency information which is placed in the vial and put in the refrigerator. "Vial of Life" stickers are then applied to refrigerator doors so that emergency personnel will see it and look inside for the vial. Newport Beach Police and Fire personnel will be alerted to look for vial of life stickers. City personnel at Oasis Center, the Friends of Oasis and the Jr. Auxiliary of the Assistance League will distribute information on the program and will coordinate the programs implementation. A noontime lunch program was made available at OASIS beginning on March 17. Every Tuesday, Thursday and Friday a $1 lunch will be served. The program has been labeled the "SOS" program for Soup, Sandwich or Salad. A former food service director with the Los Angeles County Schools has volunteered her time to serve as the chairlady for the program. She runs the program on a self-supporting basis coordinating menus, buying , and food prepa- ration. The program provides nutritious meals three times a week and provides participants with a chance to make new friends. These two programs offer good examples of the progress made by the Friends of Oasis and City recreation staff towards reaching out to the many older adults in our community. 1 e Jeffrey C.
