HomeMy WebLinkAbout6202 - Nuclear Powered Desalinization Planti THS -mec 7/28/65 RESOLUTION NOo 6202 A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF NEWPORT BEACH EXPRESSING ITS OPPOSITION TO THE LOCATION OF A COMBINATION NUCLEAR POWERED • DESALINIZATION PLANT IN THE CORONA DEL MAR AREA (PELICAN POINT) WHEREAS, the Metropolitan Water District is interested in developing a supplemental water supply and has retained the Bechtel Corporation to make a feasibility study of a proposed combination nuclear powered desalinization m electric generating plant to be located along the Coast of Orange County; and WHEREAS, two sites have been selected for final study- (1) a coastal site easterly of the Corona Del Mar district of the City of Newport Beach, and (2) an artificial island offshore from Sunset Beach; and WHEREAS, the site near Corona Del Mar is less than 1,000 feet from the city limits of the City of Newport Beach and is in equally close proximity to the highly developed Corona Del Mar residential community; and WHEREAS, the report prepared by the Bechtel Corporation does not take into consideration the recent residential growth oc- curring in the Corona Del Mar area; and WHEREAS, the location of this immense industrial-type facility near Newport Beach would be destructive of existing prop- erty values and would be totally incompatible with the master plans for future development of the surrounding area for residen- tial and recreational uses; and WHEREAS, the University of California is constructing a major campus immediately adjacent to the City of Newport Beach which will create an even greater need for preservation of the toremaining coastal area for recreational purposes; and WHEREAS, the State Legislature recognized the importance of conserving the scenic and aesthetic character of the coastline • 0 by enacting the Shell-Cunningham Act which prohibits offshore oil drilling from the Santa Ana River southerly to the Orange County line; NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the City Council of the City of Newport Beach as follows-, to That this City Council acknowledges the need for the development of the proposed desalinization plant in Orange County, but is unalterably opposed to the location of said plant on a site adjacent to the highly developed Corona Del Mar district, 2. That this City Council respectfully requests the Board of Directors of the Metropolitan Water District to reconsider its selection of the site near Corona Del Mar as the preferred site and to direct that exhaustive studies be made of all alternate sites, 3. In evaluating any sites along the coastline or in the tidal waters adjacent thereto, it is requested that careful consideration be given to the problem of beach erosion, 4. The City Clerk is directed to transmit copies of this resolution to the Board of Directors of the Metropolitan Water District, Governor Edmund G.
