RESOLUTION NO. 6252
A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF
NEWPORT BEACH DEPLORING THE APPROVAL BY THE
CALIFORNIA FISH AND GAME COMMISSION OF THE
EXPERIMENTAL ANCHOVY REDUCTION PROGRAM AND
PLEDGING THAT THE COUNCIL WILL CONTINUE ITS
EFFORTS TO PROTECT THE ANCHOVY RESOURCE
WHEREAS, the California Fish and Game Commission
recently approved an emergency, experimental anchovy reduction
program permitting the taking of 75,000 tons of anchovies annu-
ally from coastal waters; and
WHEREAS, this Council is convinced that by opening the
anchovy up to commercial taking for reduction purposes, the Fish
and Game Commission has taken a step which will lead to the destruc-
tion of recreational sport fishing along our coast; and
WHEREAS, unless a scientific conservation program is
implemented on a long -range basis, the anchovy resource will,
in time, disappear from our coastal waters just as the sardine
has disappeared;
NOW, THEREFORE, the City Council of the City of Newport
Beach resolves as follows-
That this Council deplores the action of the California
Fish and Game Commission in approving the experimental anchovy
reduction program as being contrary to the public interest,
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that this Council pledges that
it will join with other interested parties to further the cause
of protecting the anchovy resource from further depredation,
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the City Clerk is directed
to send copies of this resolution to the Governor, California Fish
and Game Commission, the County's representative in the State Legis7
lature and such other interested parties as determined by the Mayor.
