HomeMy WebLinkAbout6794 - Desalinization-Power ProjectTHS:mec 6/18/68 RESOLUTION NO. 6794 A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF c� NEWPORT BEACH URGING THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS OF THE METROPOLITAN WATER DISTRICT TO PROCEED AHEAD WITH A PROPOSED DESALINIZATION-POWER PROJECT . WHEREAS, the Southern California area is deficient in natural water supplies; and WHEREAS, The Metropolitan Water District has a need for a supplemental supply of water; and WHEREAS, The Metropolitan Water District has determined through a feasibility study that it is both feasible and economical to obtain said supplemental supply of water by the use of a combi- nation nuclear power desalting plant; and WHEREAS, the City Council does support in principle the construction in Orange County of a combination Desalinization - Power Project jointly sponsored by The Metropolitan Water District, United States Atomic Energy Commission, and the United States Department of the Interior; and WHEREAS, the City Council does approve of the recommended artificial island site located between Seal Beach and Huntington Beach for construction of the Desalinization - Power Project; and WHEREAS, the proposed desalinization plant would serve as a valuable source of supplemental water and would provide an alternate, independent source of water to the southland, and in particular to the coastal cities which may be dependent on the proposed facility as a source of supplemental water; and WHEREAS, funds were included in an $850,000,000 bond issue to provide for the construction of the desalinization plant; U and WHEREAS, The Metropolitan Water District has recently expressed its grave concern over a substantial increase in the es- timated costs of construction of a joint project; NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the City Council of the City of Newport Beach urges the Board of Directors of The Metropolitan Water District, in conjunction with the Atomic Energy • Commission and the Department of the Interior, to proceed ahead • with previous commitments to construct the combination Desaliniza- tion - Power Project on the artificial island located offshore of • Huntington Beach, California.
