RESOLUTION NO. 6940
A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY
OF NEWPORT BEACH OPPOSING THE USE OF ORANGE
COUNTY AIRPORT TO SERVE THE PACIFIC - NORTHWEST
WHEREAS, the Orange County Airport is being considered
by the Civil Aeronautics Board for designation as a satellite
field to be used to provide air service to the Pacific - Northwest;
and
WHEREAS, the City of Newport Beach and its residents
are suffering from an unacceptable noise level arising from
existing airport operations; and
WHEREAS, the use of Orange County Airport for service
to the Pacific - Northwest would exacerbate the existing noise
and pollution problems by bringing in more jet aircraft flights;
and
WHEREAS, the distance to Seattle, Washington, the
northernmost terminus of the proposed route, from Orange County
Airport is approximately 1,000 air miles; and
WHEREAS, the Phase I Master Plan of Air Transportation
for Orange County, prepared by William L. Pereira and Associates
at the direction of the Orange County Board of Supervisors, states
that the future role of the Orange County Airport is that of a
metroport from which commercial air carrier aircraft will operate
to destinations up to 400 miles, as well as a general aviation
airport oriented to business and corporate activities; and
WHEREAS, approval of air carrier service from Orange
County Airport to the Pacific - Northwest would be completely
inconsistent with the metroport concept;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the City Council of
• the City of Newport Beach that it is the policy of the City to
oppose the use of the Orange County Airport in providing air

carrier service to the Pacific - Northwest;
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the City Attorney is
directed to present the City's position to the Civil Aeronautics
Board.
