A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY
OF NEWPORT BEACH EXPRESSING APPRECIATION TO THE
CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF COSTA MESA FOR ITS
• ACTION RECOMMENDING THE ADOPTION OF A SUPERIOR
AVENUE ROUTE OF REALIGNMENT FOR THE ROUTE 55
(NEWPORT) FREEWAY AND ASSURING IT OF SUPPORT
FOR THE RED LINE ROUTE
WHEREAS, on October 7, 1968, the City Council of the
City of Newport Beach adopted a resolution requesting the
California Highway Commission to reopen the matter of the
alignment of the southerly terminus of the Newport Freeways and
WHEREAS, the City of Newport Beach is vitally concerned
over the location of the Newport Freeway and the preservation of
Newport Boulevard as a major local arterial street; and
WHEREAS, on February 10, 1969, the City Council of the
City of Newport Beach adopted a resolution urging the California
Highway Commission to adopt an alignment along Superior Avenue
for the Route 55 (Newport) Freeway in place of the presently
adopted route along Newport Boulevard; and
WHEREAS, representatives from the City of Newport Beach
have reviewed proposed realignment of the Route 55 (Newport)
Freeway with the representatives from the City of Costa Mesa to
consider the alternative realignment routes; and
WHEREAS, the City Council of the City of Costa Mesa on
March 17, 1969, approved a Superior Avenue (red route) realign-
ment in place of the presently adopted route along Newport
Boulevard; and
WHEREAS, the realignment of the Route 55 (Newport)
Freeway along the Superior Avenue red route would be in the best
interests of all parties;

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the City Council of
the City of Newport Beach hereby expresses its appreciation to
the City Council of the City of Costa Mesa for its action in

approving a recommended realignment of the Newport Freeway;
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the City of Newport Beach
hereby gives its assurance to the City of Costa Mesa of its
is support for the Red Line route for realignment.
