HomeMy WebLinkAbout7144 - California Marine Sanctuary Act of 1969RESOLUTION NO° 7 14 4 A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF NEWPORT BEACH EXPRESSING SUPPORT FOR S- 3093, "THE CALIFORNIA MARINE SANCTUARY ACT OF 196918 0 WHEREAS, the State of California has established marine sanctuaries in tide and submerged lands under state jurisdiction, wherein the production of oil, gas and other hydrocarbon substances is prohibited; and WHEREAS, the sanctuaries and the coastal lands adjacent to them are threatened with a serious pollution problem such as occurred in the Santa Barbara Channel if leases are granted for oil and gas production on federal submerged lands oceanward of the existing state sanctuaries; and WHEREAS, S -3093, entitled "The California Marine Sanctuary Act," would preclude the federal government from entering into any future leases for the exploration for or extraction of oil, gas or any other mineral on federal submerged lands adjacent to the tide and submerged lands established by the state as sanctuaries; NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the City Council of the City of Newport Beach hereby urges the enactment by the Congress and the approval of the President of the United States of 5 -3093, "The California Marine Sanctuary Act of 1969 "; BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the City Clerk is hereby directed to send copies of this resolution to the President of the United States, the Secretary of the Interior, the co- authors of the bill, the chairmen of the committees which will hear 5 -3093, and such other cities, counties, state and federal agencies and officials as may have an interest in the legislation.
