HomeMy WebLinkAbout7240 - Route 1 - Pacific Coast Freewayy• ^l.j� -1- RESOLUTION NO. 7240 A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF NEWPORT BEACH EXPRESSING SUPPORT FOR ASSEMBLY BILL • 1701 WHICH WOULD DELETE ROUTE 1 (PACIFIC COAST FREEWAY) FROM THE STATE FREEWAY SYSTEM WITHIN THE CITY LIMITS OF THE CITY OF NEWPORT BEACH, AND OPPOSING ANY FURTHER RESTUDY OF ALTERNATE ROUTES FOR THE PACIFIC COAST FREEWAY LOCATED WITHIN THE CITY OF NEWPORT BEACH . WHEREAS, the adopted alignment of the Pacific Coast Freeway (Route 1) through the City of Newport Beach will cause irreparable damage to the nature and character and ecology of this community; and WHEREAS, there are available reasonable alternative routes outside the City of Newport Beach that would be compatible with the plans and needs of the neighboring cities of Newport Beach; and WHEREAS, there is no acceptable alternate route within the City of Newport Beach; and WHEREAS, the people of the City of Newport Beach, by petition and through community associations have expressed united opposition to Pacific Coast Freeway (Route 1) through the City of Newport Beach; and WHEREAS, the City Council of the City of Newport Beach has continuously since 1963 sought to have the adopted alignment of the Pacific Coast Freeway changed so as to protect the health, safety and welfare of the citizens of the City of Newport Beach; and WHEREAS, the California State Highway Commission has • refused to respond to the appeals and needs of the people of the City of Newport Beach; and • WHEREAS, the legislature of the State of California has responded to the appeals and needs of the people of Newport Beach through AB -1701 (Badham /Schmitz); and -1- Ad �. • • • 1 -0 • -41 WHEREAS, AB -1701 was passed by the Assembly of the State of California by a vote of 46-69 and WHEREAS, AB -1701 is now before the Senate of the State of California; NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the City Council of the City of Newport Beach gives full support to Assembly Bill 1701 as introduced and without amendment and unequivocally opposes any further restudy of alternate routes within the City of Newport Beach, and strongly urges that the Senate of the State of California, in the interest of our citizens, give an affirmative vote on this measure.
