HomeMy WebLinkAbout7299 - Beach Erosion Control Measuresd -t • • • • RESOLUTION NO. 7 2 9 9 A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY - COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF NEWPORT BEACH URGING IMMEDIATE ACTION TO ACCELERATE BEACH EROSION CONTROL MEASURES AND TO RESTORE THE QUALITY OF SAND ON BEACHES IN WEST NEWPORT BEACH WHEREAS, there is a federally authorized multi -stage beach erosion control project involving ocean beaches in the western portion of the City of Newport Beach; and WHEREAS, Stage IV of the project originally provided for the construction of a new groin, the repair and extension of two existing groins and placement of sand fill on an endangered section of beach, and also provided for the restoration of the quality of sand on large portions of the beach, all of the foregoing to be accomplished in the fall of 1970; and WHEREAS, Stage IV beach erosion control work has been deferred for one year; and WHEREAS, the beaches in the City of Newport Beach are utilized by over 8,000,000 people annually, 85% of whom come from a wide regional area embracing the Counties of Orange, Los Angeles, Riverside, San Bernardino, San Diego and from other areas in California and other states; and WHEREAS, the inadequate amount of ocean beach available for public recreation is a matter of regional, state and national concern; and WHEREAS, the condition of the existing steel groins presents a serious hazard to swimmers, the present eroded condition of the beach in the vicinity of 32nd Street presents a danger to property and reduces valuable recreation space, and the high clay content of fill placed on the beach in 1969 by the Corps of Engineers is obnoxious and destroys the recreational -. -L 4 -1- ii I beach atmosphere for millions of people; SNOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the City Council of the City of Newport Beach, as follows: • The Governor of the State of California and elected representatives of the State of California to the Congress of the United States are urged to seek immediate action from the Corps of Engineers to abate existing dangerous and hazardous beach conditions, and to restore the recreational aspects of west Newport beaches by removing clay fill and replacing it with beach quality sand.
