A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY
OF NEWPORT BEACH HONORING FIRE CHIEF R. J. BRISCOE
UPON HIS RETIREMENT FROM THE FIRE DEPARTMENT
• WHEREAS, R. J. Briscoe has served with distinction in the
Fire Department of the City of Newport Beach from March 28, 1927 to
December 31, 1971; and
WHEREAS, he was appointed Fire Chief on November 1, 1952,
and has served in that capacity for the last nineteen years; and
WHEREAS, from 1938 to 1945 he served as a Director on the
California State Firemans Association Board of Directors, and has
been active in the Orange County, California, and International Fire
Chiefs Association; and
WHEREAS, he served on the first Fire Science Advisory
Committee at Santa Ana College; and
WHEREAS, Chief Briscoe has contributed unselfishly of his
time and effort to the betterment of the Fire Service; and
WHEREAS, since he joined the Fire Department in 1927 he
has been instrumental in the development of the department from a
three full -paid member force to a modern, well- equipped force of
ninety -two personnel; and
WHEREAS, during his forty -five years of service to the
City of Newport Beach he has continually displayed strength of
leadership, loyalty to the City, and dedication to the Fire Service;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the City Council of
0 the City of Newport Beach does hereby commend Chief R. J. Briscoe

for his outstanding contributions to the Fire Service and the City
Council does convey its gratitude for his forty -five years of dedi-
cated service to the City of Newport Beach,
