HomeMy WebLinkAbout7639 - Delete Route 1 of Freeway SystemRESOLUTION NO. 7639 A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF NEWPORT BEACH EXPRESSING ITS SUPPORT OF S.B. 230 AND A.B. 58 TO DELETE ROUTE 1 OF THE CALIFORNIA FREEWAY SYSTEM THROUGH THE CITY OF LONG BEACH, AND REQUESTING THAT SAID BILLS BE • AMENDED TO INCLUDE THE CITY OF NEWPORT BEACH WHEREAS, the Honorable George Deukmejian, Senator for the 37th District, has introduced a bill in the California Senate, which is designated Senate Bill No. 230, and WHEREAS, the Honorable James A. Hayes, Assemblyman for the 39th District, has introduced a bill in the California Assembly, which is designated as Assembly Bill No. 58; and WHEREAS, said S. B. 230 and A.B. 58, if enacted into law, would amend Section 253.2 of the Streets & Highways Code of the State of California, to delete from the California Freeway and Expressway System that portion of Route 1 through the City of Long Beach; and WHEREAS, Route 1 of the Pacific Coast Freeway through Newport Beach is an integral part of a coastal regional freeway, extending from a point near Oxnard in Ventura County to the vicinity of San Juan Capistrano in Orange County; and WHEREAS, deletion of major elements of the freeway to the west and north of Long Beach make it extremely questionable that this freeway will ever become the regional type of freeway originally envisioned when it was approved by the State Highway Commission; and WHEREAS, the people of the City of Newport Beach, by initiative and special election, have overwhelmingly expressed their united opposition to the Pacific Coast Freeway (Route 1) through the City of Newport Beach; and • WHEREAS, if amended to include the boundaries of the City of Newport Beach, S.B. 230 and A.B. 58 would aid this City -1- in its efforts to achieve a relocation of the adopted coastal freeway route through Newport Beach, in compliance with the needs and desires of the people of this City; NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the City Council of • the City of Newport Beach gives full support to Senate Bill 230 and Assembly Bill 58, and respectfully requests that these bills be amended to include the deletion from the State Freeway System of that portion of the Pacific Coast Freeway lying within the City of Newport Beach; BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the City Clerk is directed to send copies of this resolution to Senators Deukmejian and Car- penter and Assemblymen Hayes and Badham, the Assembly Committee on Transportation and Commerce, and such other individuals and agencies as the Mayor may direct.
