HomeMy WebLinkAbout7934 - Transportation Corridor StudyRESOLUTION NO. 7934 A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF NEWPORT BEACH EXPRESSING THE CITY'S WILL- INGNESS UNDER CERTAIN CONDITIONS TO COOPERATE WITH THE STATE DIVISION OF HIGHWAYS IN A TRANSPORTATION CORRIDOR STUDY • WHEREAS, Route 1 of the Pacific Coast Freeway through Newport Beach has been deleted by Legislative action; and WHEREAS, said route remains in the State Highway System, and accordingly, the State continues to share the responsibility for meeting the transportation needs in the former freeway corridor; and WHEREAS, the State Division of Highways has requested that the City of Newport Beach explore with them the need for further transportation studies and the need for any previously acquired rights -of -way for a conventional highway, other trans- portation purpose, or other public use; and WHEREAS, it is understood that said study cannot in- clude a freeway or expressway as an alternate solution; and WHEREAS, the City of Newport Beach initiated its own traffic study approximately two years ago, which study is now within a few months of completion; and WHEREAS, the Newport Beach Transportation Plan Citizens Advisory Committee has recommended that the City express its willingness under certain conditions to cooperate in said Trans- portation Corridor Study; and WHEREAS, the City Council, based on the recommendation of the Citizens Transportation Advisory Committee, has determined that further study is desirable and that it would be in the best interest of the City to cooperate,wunder certain conditions, with the State Division of Highways in a cooperative transporta- tion corridor study. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the City Council of the City of Newport Beach thattthe City cooperate with the State Division of Highways and the County of Orange in a Transportation -1- Corridor Study on the basis that each city must be permitted to define the corridor within the city, and that the State will re- lease excess rights -of -way when defined and requested by each local community. • BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Mayor is hereby autho- rized and directed to transmit a letter to the State Department of Public Works, Division of Highways, stating this City's posi- tion with regard to the Transportation Corridor Study.
