HomeMy WebLinkAbout9901 - Contributions of Al ForgitRESOLUTION NO. `-901 • A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF NEWPORT BEACH RECOGNIZING THE CONTRIBUTIONS OF AL FORGIT TO THE COMMUNITY AND TO THE CITY OF NEWPORT BEACH a WHEREAS, AL FORGIT and his wife, Peg, arrived in the Harbor Area in 1935; and WHEREAS, by World War II the Forgits owned and operated a rather extensive sports- fishing fleet in Newport Harbor as well as the restaurant at the Balboa Pavilion; and WHEREAS, in 1953 Forgit's Hardware at 2205 West Balboa Boulevard was established, which enterprise has provided continu- ous access to merchandise on that part of the Peninsula ever since; and WHEREAS, AL FORGIT was elected to the Newport Beach City Council in 1964 and served in that capacity until 1968; and WHEREAS, AL FORGIT, both as a member of the City Council and as a private citizen, demonstrated a genuine concern and commitment toward enhancing and improving the quality of life in Newport Beach; and WHEREAS, through his weekly columns in a local news- paper, AL FORGIT provided his unique commentary on local, • national and international events; and WHEREAS, AL FORGIT constantly held a mirror up to the City to remind it of its own fallibilities; and R, ,1 0 WHEREAS, the community sadly learned of AL FORGIT's death on September 29, 1980; and WHEREAS, the passing of this man is cause for great sadness among the citizens of the City of Newport Beach; and WHEREAS, the City Council desires to officially commemorate and recognize the community contributions of one of its former members, AL FORGIT, NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the City Council of the City of Newport Beach does hereby recognize the important and long - lasting contribution of AL FORGIT to the community and City in which he resided. The City Council does further extend its official condolences to AL FORGIT's family and to his many friends and acquaintances. ADOPTED this 14th day of October, 1980.
