HomeMy WebLinkAbout82-139 - Bottle & Can Refund InitiativeRESOLUTION NO. 82 -139 A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF NEWPORT BEACH ENDORSING PROPOSITION 11, BOTTLE AND CAN REFUND'INITIATIVE. WHEREAS, the packaging and marketing of consumer products has resulted in the ever - mounting increase in the mass of material discarded by residents and visitors within our jurisdiction; and WHEREAS, non - returnable beverage containers are a major portion of this packaging explosion and, to a large extent, contribute to the solid waste load; and WHEREAS, those throwaway beverage containers, in fact, encourage litter to be deposited on the streets, in the parks, and on the beaches within our community; and WHEREAS, the cost to this City for the regular removal and disposal of normal household garbage and litter is considerable; and WHEREAS, these containers also represent a waste of this country's finite energy and natural resources, in addition to the limitation of this City's annual budget; and WHEREAS, the City Council and Newport Beautification Advisory Committee believe the matter of curbing the sale of throwaway containers can best be handled by Statewide legislation in order to avoid inequities to individual areas; NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the City Council of the City of Newport Beach hereby urges support for the ballot proposal which would require minimum deposits upon beverage containers of at least five cents; and BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that this body will express, through all available means, its support of a minimum five cent beverage container deposit at the State level.
