HomeMy WebLinkAbout85-61 - Flood Control for Santa Ana RiverRESOLUTION NO. 85 -61 A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF NEWPORT BEACH IN SUPPORT OF FLOOD CONTROL FOR THE SANTA ANA RIVER WHEREAS, Prado Dam, completed by the Corps of Engineers on the Santa • Ana River in 1941 for the protection of Orange County is now inadequate for the purpose, and WHEREAS, as a consequence of that inadequacy Orange County faces the worst flood threat west of the Mississippi in terms of potential loss of life and property damage; and WHEREAS, the occurrence of a major project flood would directly damage 21 of Orange County's 26 cities, would take as many as 3,000 lives and cause in excess of $10 billion loss of property in those cities directly affected and would seriously and adversely affect the employment, services and welfare of the rest of Orange County during a long period of reconstruction; and WHEREAS, the Corps of Engineers Santa Ana River Main Stem Project, upon completion, would prevent these damages and is included in H.R. 6 and S. 366, omnibus water projects bills now before the House of Representatives and U.S. Senate for authorization; NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the City Council of the City of Newport Beach, California, supports the Santa Ana Main Stem Project and urgently requests the House of Representatives and the U.S. Senate to act favorably this year in enacting a water projects omnibus bill including the Santa Ana River Main Stem Project so that remedial work can begin as soon as possible; and BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the House of Representatives and the U.S. Senate are requested to continue to make appropriations for the Corps of Engineers planning and design work on the Santa Ana River Main Stem Project suf- ficient to keep the work on schedule; and BE IT FINALLY RESOLVED that this resolution be transmitted to Senators Cranston and Wilson; to Representatives in Congress Dannemeyer, Lungren, Badham, • Packard, Dornan; to Mr. Hatfield, Chairman of the Senate Committee on Appropriations and the Subcommittee on Energy and Water Development; to Mr. Stafford, Chairman of the Senate Committee on Environment and Public Works; to Mr. Howard, Chairman of the House Committee on Public Works and Transportation; 1 oft to Mr. Whitten, Chairman of the House Committee on Appropriations; to Mr. Roe, Chairman of the House Subcommittee on Water Resources; to Mr. Bevill, Chairman of the House Subcommittee on Energy and Water Development; to Mr. Abdnor, Chairman of the Senate Subcommittee on Water Resources; to the Santa Ana River • Flood Protection Agency, Orange County Flood Control District; and to the California Water Quality Control Board, Santa Ana Region.
