HomeMy WebLinkAbout2008-80 - Proposition 5RESOLUTION NO. 2008. 80 A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF NEWPORT BEACH OPPOSING THE PASSAGE OF PROPOSITION 5, ALSO KNOWN AS THE NONVIOLENT OFFENDER REHABILITATION ACT (NORA) WHEREAS, the Drug Policy Alliance, who placed Proposition 36 on the ballot in 2000, have again gathered signatures to place Proposition 5, the Nonviolent Offender Rehabilitation Act, on the November 2008 statewide ballot, and WHEREAS, the arguments and fact sheets in support of Proposition 5 do not accurately reflect what this law would do nor highlight the local impact on public safety, and WHEREAS, the Safety and Communities Committee reviewed this item at its September 3, 2008, meeting and recommended to approve opposition to Proposition 5. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the City Council of the City of Newport Beach as follows: The City Council is hereby authorized to formally oppose Proposition 5, also know as the Nonviolent Offender Rehabilitation Act (NORA), on the November 2008 statewide ballot.
