Surfboards On Parade, founded by The Rotary Club of Huntington Beach is a participatory art experience where acclaimed artists are invited to create art on surfboards shaped by invited legendary shapers. The 28 Surfboards featured in this exciting collaboration will be at sponsored locations throughout Huntington Beach to educate and inspire current and new audiences around the world on Surf City's rich Surfing history through the cultural arts. Skin cancer is the most common form of cancer in the United States. More than 3.5 million new cases are diagnosed each year, more than all other cancers com- bined, yet it is a type of cancer that we possess the tools to prevent. The money raised will be used for skin cancer screening events, community outreach and education to our schools; and to provide knowledge of prevention to ultimately help eradicate skin cancer for our children, grandchildren, and future genera- tions to come. The soulfulness of this project is so engaging and contagious. Every Surfboard has a story and we wanted our boards to reflect that "talk story" vibe. We began to layer shapers, or surf board builders with artists that had experienced each other or whose paths had somehow crossed in their lifetimes. Tim Bessell, a shaper in La Jolla had met Andy Warhol when he was a child. Tim now has the exclusive rights to use Andy Warhol's art on his custom shaped boards. How about Dave HdbrechVs charcoal drawing of Kelly Slater on an Al Merrick board ridden and signed by Kelly himself? Al Merrick is Kelly's shaper and mentor and Kelly even lived with Al when he was just rising to the super stardom of surf that he commands today. Imagine experiencing the rush of standing next to a surf- board shaped by the surf film legend, Robert August that has been meaningfully and vibrantly adorned with the art of John Van Hamersveld, the artist that creat- ed the iconic Endless Summer movie poster as we celebrate the 50 year anniver- sary of that epic journey.
