Wood (949) 644 -3222 PROJECT: City Arts Commission Request to Review Balboa Peninsula Sign Program SUGGESTED ACTION: Refer Sign Program to the City Arts Commission 1' Direct Staff to Return Sign Program Directly to the City Council The chair of the City Arts Commission sent the attached letter after the City Council's discussion of a sign program for the Balboa Peninsula, requesting that the Commission have an opportunity to provide input. The Newport Beach Charter includes the following in the list of the Commissions powers and duties: (a) Act in an advisory capacity to the City Council in all matters pertaining to artistic, aesthetic and cultural aspects of the City. Because the Charter is not specific as to matters on which the Commission should advise the Council, and because it does not require Commission review of public signs, staff is presenting this request to the City Council for direction. It is our understanding that the issue will come back to the council for a final decision some time next month. The Arts Commission would appreciate having the opportunity to give input into the public sign program, as one of the goals of the program is to improve the aesthetics of the area, and to provide aesthetic consistency.
