HomeMy WebLinkAbout20 - New Community Park Proposed NamesItem No. 20 - COMMUNITY SERVICES DEPARTMENT July 26, 1999 Arts & Cultural ' Library ' Recreation ' seniors To: Mayor and Members of City Council From: Parks, Beaches and Recreation Commission Re: Proposed Names for New Community Park RECOMMENDATION Select one of the following proposed names for the official City name of the new City park which lies southerly of Bonita Canyon Road, easterly of MacArthur Boulevard. Bonita Canyon Park Buffalo Canyon Park Ford Road Park MacArthur Park Newport Sports Park 0 BACKGROUND In FY 1998/99, the Parks, Beaches and Recreation Commission established a Park Naming Committee to consider names of the new park. Two committee meetings were held and noticed for the public. The committee report was formally considered at the Commission meeting on July 6, 1999. Previous to the meeting, articles were placed in the local paper regarding the pending decision and the opportunity for the public to provide input. A sketch of the park is attached. At the July 6, 1999 meeting, the Parks, Beaches and Recreation Commission voted unanimously to forward to the City Council for consideration the five proposed names for the park, as indicated above. Attachment I -9 NAMING OF CITY PARKS The City of Newport Beach has a comprehensive program to provide park and open space to serve the leisure and recreation needs of residents. It is desirable that appropriate names be selected for future parks and public recreational facilities. The following guidelines shall serve as policy on this matter. A. Suggestions for naming new parks shall be reviewed by the Parks, Beaches and Recreation Commission with a recommendation being transmitted to the City Council for approval. B. New park names can be chosen from, but not limited to, the following categories: 1. Streets or schools bordering park 2. Topography 3. Theme 4. Renowned citizens of the community S. Common names already in place for the area C. New or existing community centers, buildings, rooms or site amenities may be dedicated in honor of persons who have served their community in an exceptional and distinguished manner. D. Prior to the dedication or naming of a park or public recreational facility for a deceased persons, there should be a passage of six months from death before the Parks, Beaches and Recreation Commission acts upon the request and makes a recommendation to the City Council. At the July 15, 1999 meeting of the Newport Hills Community Association Board of Directors, it was unanimously decided that the preferred name of the park is Buffalo Canyon Park, however Bonita Canyon Park is also acceptable. The Board feels that the name Ford Sports Park is inappropriate to the area.
