HomeMy WebLinkAboutP1 - Jeffrey Stern AwardO October 25, 1999 Council Agenda Presentation To: Mayor and Members of the City Council From: Tim Riley, Fire and Marine Chief W Subject: City Council to Recognize Edward Karagozian as the Recipient of the 1999 Jeffrey Stern Community Preparedness Award RECOMMENDATION Edward Karagozian deserves the recognition of this City Council and the Citizens of Newport Beach as the recipient of the 1999 Jeffrey Stern Community Preparedness Award. BACKGROUND Jeffrey Stern, a long time contributor towards the emergency preparedness effort, passed away last October. In an effort to recognize Mr. Stern's involvement and achievements in the emergency preparedness area, an annual Community Preparedness Award has been created in his name. The Jeffrey Stern Community Preparedness award recognizes individuals who have made outstanding efforts to both their personal emergency preparedness endeavors, as well as to the preparedness of the Newport Beach community. Edward Karagozian, a resident of Newport Beach since 1979, has been an active volunteer with the Radio Amateur Civil Emergency Service (RACES). Edward has been responsible for coordinating training, recruitment, drills, and radio equipment with RACES, complimenting the emergency responders of the City of Newport Beach.. Edward has also served as a City Liaison with Orange County RACES and Orange County Communications for the purposes of disaster communications preparedness; The City of Newport Beach community relies on RACES and its volunteers as a vital link in our communications plan during emergencies. Edward Karagozian has spent countless hours and personal funds to operate and participate with the RACES program. 11 WHEREAS, the memory of Mr. Jeffrey Stem and his efforts with emergency preparedness has prompted the creation of a Community Preparedness Award in his name; and WHEREAS, Edward Karagozian, a resident of Newport Beach since 1979, has been an active RACES volunteer since 1989, when the group was established in Newport Beach; and WHEREAS, Edward Karagozian has been responsible for coordinating training, recruitment, drills, and radio equipment; and WHEREAS, Edward Karagozian has served as a City Liaison with Orange County RACES and Orange County Communications for the purposes of disaster communications preparedness; and WHEREAS, Edward Karagozian has already established radio contacts in Australia, which will provide the City with approximately 17 hours of lead time for intelligence regarding the date rollover; and WHEREAS, Edward Karagozian has spent countless hours and personal funds to operate and participate with the RACES program, NOW, THEREFORE, I, DENNIS O'NEIL, Mayor of the City of Newport Beach, hereby recognize the accomplishments and efforts put forth by Edward Karagozian as the recipient of the 1999 Jeffrey Stern Community Preparedness Award IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand and caused the Seal of the City of Newport Beach to be affixed the day of 1999.
