HomeMy WebLinkAbout15 - Donation of City PropertyTO: FROM: SUBJECT: semseftu Mayor and City Council General Services Director Donation of City Property City Council Agenda Item No. 15 February 8, 2000 Recommendation Approve the donation of the property on the attached list to the Newport-Mesa Unified School District. Background The Equipment Maintenance Division is currently equipped to conduct smog testing of the City's operating fleet. In 1998, the City invested in the purchase of new smog testing equipment required by changes in State smog testing requirements. As a result of the new requirements, some of the City's testing equipment became obsolete. In April 1999, the City Council approved the donation of one of the obsolete units to the Newport- Mesa Unified School District ( NMUSD). Staff has identified two additional testing units that are obsolete, as well as two parts washing bins that are no longer of use to the City. Staff contacted the NMUSD who has confirmed their interest in obtaining the equipment with the attached letter. Discussion Per Council Policy F -11, Donations made by the City must be approved by the City Council and whenever possible, local charities and homeowners associations will be given first choice. This current donation request is consistent with Council Policy. Typically, the smog testing equipment would be disposed of at auction. Staff has identified estimated disposal values for each equipment item (see attached). However, because of the obsolete nature of the equipment, staff also anticipates that the equipment may not necessarily generate the estimated values sold at auction, and the City would be better served by the proposed donation to an educational institution.
