A. Summer and fall 1999, phone calls by all trustees, once monthly
B. Summary of Results
1. Wanted more awareness of library activities
2. Very favorable about library services
3. Wanted more books on cassette
II. Voluntary Post Card Survey (copies available for each Council Member)
A. Mailed to Newport Beach residents in spring issue of the Newport Navigator
B. 1100 responses
C. Preliminary summary of results:
1. 64% of respondents listed the Central Library as their primary library
2. Customers chose library used primarily because of proximity
3. Primary library use is check -out of materials; second highest use — research
4. Attendance at programs, highest program listed, the DSLS; second highest,
programs /storyhours for youth
5. Largest age group responding (49% of total responses), 55 years or older
D. Improvements requested most often (in descending order of number of requests):

1. More books (in specific disciplines), especially best sellers
2. More books on cassette
3. More materials in children's collection (books,_videos, books on cassette)
4. More videos
5. Longer hours for all sites, especially weekend

November 1999
The trustees, using phone numbers of library card holding customers, each called from the library
for a two hour period on June 1, July 6, September 7, and October 5, a "Hotline" was also
established for return calls.
