Nearly one -fifth of the sales tax revenue collected (18 %) is distributed to eligible agencies to pay for local transportation needs as determined by each agency. Local Fair Share Program funds are distributed quarterly and require agencies to fulfill certain requirements for reporting, continued local investment for transportation related maintenance, and continuity with regional transportation plans, management and strategies. The formula accounts for population, street mileage and amount of sales tax collected in each jurisdiction. This program was known as Measure M Turnback under Measure M1. The City of Newport Beach expects to receive about $1.8 million in fiscal year 2014/2015 for local street projects to augment funds previously received under the Fair Share Program.
