SUBJECT: Swearing In Date for New City Council Members
RECOMMENDATION
Set Tuesday, December 12, 2000, as the date for the swearing in ceremony for new City Council
Members.
BACKGROUND
Section 400 of the City Charter indicates that the term of each Council Member shall commence
on the date of the City Council meeting, following his or her election, at which the Council
receives the certification of election results from the City Clerk. The County Registrar of Voters
has indicated that the date they have set for certifying the election is Tuesday, November 28,
2000.
California law permits 28 days to complete the official canvass of the election. The law
recognizes the complexity of completing the count and conducting a thorough audit of the
election results to ensure accuracy.
