HomeMy WebLinkAbout16 - BA-029 - Disaster PreparednessCouncil Agenda February 13, 2001 Item No. 16 To: Mayor and Members of the City Council From: Timothy Riley, Fire Chief 42 Subject: Transfer Funds from Pacific Life Foundation and the Emergency Management Assistance Grant Program to Fire Department Disaster Preparedness RECOMMENDATION Approve Budget Amendment No. BA -_, transferring grant funds from Pacific Life Foundation and the Emergency Management Assistance Grant Program to the Fire Department for Disaster Preparedness. Authorize the automatic carry-over into next year's budget, if the grant funds are not completely utilized this year. BACKGROUND In an effort to support disaster preparedness programs, the Fire Department applied for two grants, one from the Pacific Life Foundation and one from the Federal Emergency Management Agency, Emergency Management Assistance Grant Program. Both grants have been funded for the amounts listed below: Pacific Life Grant Foundation: $10,000 Emergency Management Assistance (EMA): $ 5,303 The Pacific Life Grant has been funded specifically targeting the Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) Program, which provides no cost emergency preparedness training to community members who live and/or work in Newport Beach. The CERT Program focuses on hands -on skills, including Light Search and Rescue, Disaster Fire Suppression, Disaster Medical Operations, Disaster Psychology, and Emergency Preparedness. Participants learn how to prepare for and safely respond to emergencies. The CERT Program is in its second offering and has had an extremely positive impact on the volunteers involved. , EMA Grant funds are aimed specifically at emergency preparedness programs for the City, including City responder training, emergency exercises, community education, CERT, and emergency plan re- development. The Grants are in the form of single donation and are non - expiring. CONCLUSION Approving the budget amendment re- allocating $15,303 of grant funds to the Fire Department Disaster Preparedness Budget will support the success of CERT and enable the City's emergency preparedness efforts to continue on a positive, progressive track. FISCAL IMPACT This budget re- appropriation will have a positive impact on the current Disaster Preparedness Budget.
