These funds represent donations and fundraising efforts which were previously deposited in this account: • $33,000 for Literacy Services • $100,000 from the Newport Beach Public Library Foundation • Memorial gifts of $2,985 for former Trustee Bob Knox • $4,985 for former Librarian Marianne Yesk • $75 for former Literacy Board Member Jack Dwan Please transfer Reiber funds in the amount of $8,600 from 800 -2247 to the expenditure accounts listed below. Reiber funds were given as a bequest in 1995 from the estate of Roy Raymond Reiber, a former Costa Mesa resident, to be used to enhance the children's programs at the Balboa Branch Library. Total transfer $149,645. Funds in the amount of $33,000 to account 4060 for Literacy Services will be used as indicated Account 4060 -7020. $25,000 to fund the salaries of the Literacy Coordinator ($12,678) and the Literacy Assistant ($12,322). These funds allow the library to continue working with students and tutors, as well as expanding programs. Account 4060 -8010. 500 for resources and equipment to enhance the Families for Literacy programs. Account 4060 -8050. Jj,500 for mailing of communication and Literacy newsletters to clients and tutors. Account 4060 -8080. 1 000 for contract services to run Literacy programs and for tutor training. Account 4060 -8104. 1 000 for attendance of literacy staff at the Statewide Library Conferences. Account 4060 -8140. 2 500 for supplies ($1,500) and printing ($1,000) necessary to support the Literacy program. Account 4060 -8200. jj,500 for instructional resources to conduct the programs. H. Funds in the amount of $83,045 to 4010 -8260 for library and collection development. Account 4010 -8260 $16,000 for Children's Nonfiction Materials. Children's nonfiction is in constant demand by children for their recreational needs and in meeting the heavy curriculum demand of the schools. The current collection does not meet the demand. It is imperative that the library collections have current materials in all areas of knowledge. At the Central library with its high student use, it is also necessary to have multiple copies of books on frequently assigned topics. Additional funds will enhance a heavily used area of the collection and provide children greater likelihood of needed materials being readily available. Utilization of Funds to be Appropriated Page 2 J1 ,M for Groves Dictionary of Music and Musicians The New Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians is the definitive work on music. The 29- volume set is international in scope and includes information on 20th century composers, jazz, rock, and popular music. Encyclopedic coverage of musical instruments and their history extends to non - Western, folk, and popular instruments. Library Journal named New Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians one of the best reference works of the decade. 4 500 for additions to new DVD Collection The library plans to develop this new collection at all 4 sites. It will include approximately 400 items with a mix of high interest titles, old and new musicals, and non - fiction films. These funds will be in addition to funds received from the Friends of the Library to establish the new collection. $50,00 for New York Times on microfilm (1957 -68, printed indices). The library has the New York Times on microfilm from 1969 to present; 1851 -1899. Adding the film from 1957 -1968 would greatly expand the library's coverage. The newspaper is well used by customers of all ages; supports local school curriculum and customer requests for primary source historical material. The film for 1851 -1899 was purchased in support of the American History collection (BET funds, FY 1998/99). 4 985 for Reference Books In memory of Newport Beach librarian Marianne Yesk, reference books will be purchased in her areas of interest and expertise. These areas include the arts, fine art and modern dance, European travel, and gourmet cooking. 2 985 for Knox Funds In memory of Library Trustee Bob Knox, this funding will support and enhance the heavily used children's and young adult non- fiction collection is in constant demand by students in the community as they work hard to complete their school assignments. 75 for Memorial Books In honor of former Library Literacy volunteer, Jack Dwan. III. Funds in the amount of $25,000 to account 4010 -9000 for the Children's Room. Account 4010 -9000. $25,000 for update of the Central Library Children's Room. After eight years of very heavy use by children, parents, and grandparents, the Children's Room at the Central Library shows significant wear. Adding shelving for new formats and replacing existing worn furniture will enhance using the library by parents and children. Utilization of Funds to be Appropriated Page 3 IV. Funds in the amount of $8,600 for materials for Balboa Branch Library from the Reiber Trust Account 4010 -8260 1ZLM — • $700 for the binding of nautical periodicals. The bound periodicals support the unique Nautical Collection that is used by adults and children alike. Binding the periodicals preserves the materials so they may be available for research for years to come. • $6,300 for databases for youth, which include: World Atlas Online Science Experiments Online Comparative Religions Online World Book Online Account 4010 -8140 •1 600 for additional equipment at Branch • Video rack to house videos. • Materials for story time presentation • Large stuffed animals for story time room.
