Harkless, City Clerk 949 - 644 -3005, Harkless@city.newport-beach.ca.us SUBJECT: Unscheduled Vacancy on the Planning Commission RECOMMENDATION: Declare a vacancy on the Planning Commission due to the appointment of Leslie Daigle to the District 4 City Council position. 2. Confirm the Mayor's appointment of and to serve on the Ad -Hoc Appointments Committee. 3. Direct the City Clerk to post and publish a Special Vacancy Notice requesting that applications be submitted by 4:00 p.m. on Thursday, October 14, 2004, and schedule the submission of the nominations to the Council on October 26, 2004 with the final appointment to be made on November 9, 2004. DISCUSSION: Background: On Tuesday, September 21, 2004, Leslie Daigle was appointed to fill the vacant seat on City Council created by the resignation of Mayor Pro Tern Gary Adams. Ms. Daigle was appointed to a four -year term on the Planning Commission effective July 1, 2004. Her term expires on June 30, 2008, therefore an appointment will need to be made to fill her unexpired term. Pursuant to Council Policy A -2, I have prepared a Special Vacancy Notice for posting and publication of the unscheduled vacancy. As per the notice, applications will be accepted by the City Clerk's office until 4:00 p.m. on Thursday, October 14, 2004. At the close of the application period, I will forward the current applications on file, as well Unscheduled Vacancy on Planning Commission September 28, 2004 Page 2 as any new applications, to the newly- appointed ad -hoc appointments committee for them to review and conduct any necessary interviews. The two nominations made by the committee will be forwarded to the full Council for confirmation on Tuesday, October 26, 2004 with the final appointment scheduled for Tuesday, November 9, 2004.
