DISCUSSION: The Police Department staff has been exploring options to improve the condition of our lobby area, while at the same time providing information to the general public in the lobby area of the Police Department. Thousands of people enter the lobby each year and while here, we have the desire to efficiently provide them with regularly requested information, as well as highlight the rich history of the Newport Beach Police Department through exhibits incorporated into a remodeled, pleasant lobby environment. Beyond the clear need to give the lobby a much needed "30- year -old facelift," we hoped to be in a position to attract donations to fund the upgrade necessary for the display areas required to capture the history of the Organization. We did not want to rely on General Fund monies for an enhancement some would consider a luxury. We also wanted to try to have the project ready to capture the spirit of the City's Centennial Celebration beginning this Fall, by virtue of the historical displays provided. The Department regularly conducts tours of the Department, which include civic groups, school classes and Boy and Girl Scout Troops. In addition to the tours, the Police Auditorium is used for a variety of Community and training meetings, with the attendees gathering in the lobby. An improved lobby display will serve to reach and serve the portion of the Community that enters the Police Department. Police Department Lobby Remodel May 24, 2005 Page 2 of 3 The displays would include: • Interactive Educational Displays Interactive displays will include a computer screen with the Department website. The website includes information such as job opportunities, Citizen and Teen Academy class announcements, news releases, crime prevention information, fees and services, crime map data, alarm information, etc. In addition, it is our desire to provide historical information, which will include a 100 -year historical video of the Department that was produced a few years ago in- house, and viewable on a video monitor. Museum Quality Memorabilia One of our Retired Police Sergeants has amassed a significant collection of police memorabilia from Newport Beach and the surrounding area that spans over 50 years. The memorabilia includes antique weaponry, badges, uniforms, hats, handcuffs, batons, patches, etc. Because of the vast collection of items, they can be rotated periodically to keep the display fresh and interesting. Awards and Recognition Every year our employees are recognized for significant achievements and work performance in the form of plaques and awards. The cabinets would prominently display achievements by those that work in the Department, as well as awards the Department has received. • Technology Vast improvements in police technology have taken place in the last several decades, and the Department intends to highlight those advances by displaying technology associated with the advancement of police radios, computers, and other communication devices and equipment. Mr. Ky Nam is an entrepreneur, businessman, and a resident of the City of Newport Beach. His son has been a Newport Beach Police Explorer for the past two years. Mr. Nam originally approached Lt. Shulman and expressed the desire to fund a project that would help the Police Department. Mr. Nam wanted to fund the purchase of Automated External Defibrillators, but found out that had been done by other Community members. He learned that the Department was exploring the idea of upgrading the lobby area and, as a result, donated $50,000 toward the expense of that project. (As it turned out, the Department had just received the architectural renderings of the remodeling concept, prior to commencing the fundraising effort, which we were able to share with Mr. Nam). Police Department Lobby Remodel May 24, 2005 Page 3 of 3 Mr. Alfonso "AI" Cordero is a Developer and resident of the City of Newport Beach, and is a business partner and neighbor of Mr. Nam. Both Mr. Cordero and Mr. Nam discussed the lobby project we were exploring and their mutual desire to assist. As a result of Mr. Cordero's use of architects relating to his own business, he offered to fund all of the costs of architectural services needed to prepare plans for the proposed lobby project. The exact cost of the architectural services being provided by William E. Skinner has not yet been determined. CONCLUSION: Both Mr. Nam and Mr. Cordero are residents of Newport Beach and thought it important to "give something back to the Community." Acknowledging members of the Community publicly who choose to use their wealth to help support City projects is demonstrative of how members of our Community are unique and make Newport Beach a very special place to live. We sincerely appreciate their generosity and their involvement.
