HomeMy WebLinkAbout07 - City Centennial 2006 Steering CommitteeCITY OF NEWPORT BEACH CITY COUNCIL STAFF REPORT Agenda Item No. 7 June 14, 2005 TO: HONORABLE MAYOR AND MEMBERS OF THE CITY COUNCIL FROM: Recreation and Senior Services Department Marie Knight, Director - 644 -3157 - mknig ht@ city. newport-beach. ca. us SUBJECT: Appointment to City Centennial 2006 Steering Committee RECOMMENDATION Adopt Resolution No. 2005 -_ to expand the membership of the City Centennial 2006 Committee and allow additional members to be added in the future by a vote of the City Centennial 2006 Steering Committee, and approve the appointment of Richard Luehrs and Ray Halowski to the committee. BACKGROUND On January 27, 2004, the City Council adopted Resolution 2004 -11 establishing the City Centennial 2006 Steering Committee. On March 23, 2004, the City Council adopted Resolution 2004 -24 expanding the membership to include the Directors of the Recreation & Senior Services Department and the Library Services Department; a member from the Chamber of Commerce, the Newport Beach Visitors & Conference Bureau, the Nautical Museum and seven (7) citizens from Newport Beach. Current citizen members of the Committee include Tom Anderson Dayna Pettit Barry Allen Cecelia Tobin Cecilia Nott Gay Wassall -Kelly William Finster As the Centennial Celebration planning continues to move forward it has become necessary to add members to the Committee. These persons are volunteers who are chairing key Sub - Committees and it is essential that they participate at the Committee level with the decision making process. At this time the Committee recommends that the City Council approve the addition of Richard Luehrs and Ray Halowski to the Committee. Richard is chairing the Business Development Sub - Committee and Ray is chairing the Marketing and Public Relations Committee. In addition, staff requests that City Council give the authority for future members to be added by a majority vote of the Steering Committee. Prepared by: lr . Attachments: Resolution RESOLUTION NO. 2005- A RESOLUTION OF THE NEWPORT BEACH CITY COUNCIL EXPANDING THE MEMBERSHIP OF THE CITY CENTENNIAL 2006 COMMITTEE AND REVISING THE APPOINTMENT PROCEDURE WHEREAS, Resolution 2004 -11 stated that the Committee shall consist of three Council Members appointed by the Mayor and those community member positions recommended to Council and approved by Council to ensure that the centennial planning and celebrations are created and supported by the community; WHEREAS, Resolution 2004 -24 stated that that the committee will include the Directors of the Recreation & Senior Services Department and the Library Services Department; a member from the Newport Beach Chamber of Commerce, the Newport Beach Conference & Visitors Bureau, the Nautical Museum, and seven citizens. NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the City Council appoint two additional members and allow the Committee to add members as needed by a vote of the City Centennial 2006 Steering Committee.
