IlAvkbn 46-Q—=- :.. dOPWO .- •uuIn 191 g but was used pre omin after 1935. • Some dredging occurred in 1920 and in 1934 -35 with the large scale dredging of the Lower Bay, with no maintenance dredging since then. -During 1940's and 50's the channel supported boatbuilding activities (minesweepers, subchasers and rescue boats) for the U.S. and Mexican Navies for World War II and the Korean War. -in 1964, 19 shipyards operated in Newport Bay, today there are six operational shipyards. Predominant locations have been the Rhine and Mariner's Mile. • Plating firms were also present in the Rhine Channel watershed. How were the field samples collected? ''j� The core lengths (depth of accumulated sediments) varied Harbor from about 79 inches for the station one, to about 23 inches Resources for the station 14. Division Core tubes were transported to a processing area constructed near the channel, at the turning basin, for immediate processing. Harbor Resources Division W e found: -Misc. LL_ f s+ ®" What do all of these results of chemical analyses mean for the Newport Bay ecosystem? Harbor Resources Division A risk assessment was performed that evaluated the potential for adverse effects to fishes, birds and marine mammals from Rhine Channel sediments under existing conditions. • For all fish species, dietary exposure to copper indicated potential adverse effects to survival, growth, or reproduction. • For pelican and cormorant eggs, the analysis showed that the level of DOE and PCB's indicated the potential risk to reproduction of these birds. 9 How were the field samples collected ? Harbor D 15 core samples were collected at locations previously sampled Resources during SCCWRP study with one additional station added near 25th Resources street storm drain. D Analytical tests were run for metals, PCBs, PAHs, pesticides, and TOC. Physical analyses include grain size , Atterberg Limits and moisture content. How were the samples processed in the field? Harbor Samples were collected from all defining strata above the native Resources material, and from the underlying native material. Division The only area of the core not sub - sampled for the analysis was the small mixed layer between the native and depositional material, where it was not possible to differentiate the two. =Nt'AM Ad 10 `� vpAT How deep does the contamination go?
