CCAFF was established to oversee and implement the design, planning, construction, and community fundraising efforts in support of the updating and upgrading of the Marian Bergeson Aquatics Complex ( "MBAC ") located on the campus of Corona del Mar High School in Newport Beach, California. MBAC is subject to a joint use agreement (the "Joint Use Agreement") between the Newport-Mesa Unified School District ( "NMUSD ") and the City of Newport Beach ( "CNB "). The pool was put into service in 1990 after construction was completed with funds contributed by the CNB, NMUSD, and donations from many businesses and individuals throughout the community. Since it opened, MBAC has been used daily, nearly year- round, for aquatics activities ranging from high school water polo and swim teams, physical education classes, and various community -wide aquatics programs, including youth water polo, competitive swimming, adult lap swimming, seasonal swimming instruction, life guard training, and much, much more. MBAC has also served as a venue for many regional, national, and international aquatics competitions and events. Nearly seventeen years have passed since MBAC was completed. Major maintenance work is required to repair and stop further deterioration of, and to update and upgrade the facility, as well as to preserve an asset important the school and community. Specifically, the pool needs to be re- plastered, the deck and drainage systems need to be repaired, the office needs to be remodeled to provide private work spaces for the high school coaches and CNB representatives operating CNB's programs, new restrooms, including locker rooms, and shade structures must be installed over the bleachers, wiring for the score board and public address system needs to be updated and repaired, and much more. CCAFF estimates that the project http: // cdmpool .org /A11_About_CCAFF.html 1/812007 All About CCAFF will cost nearly $1.4 million. Page 2 of 2 In December, 2005, NMUSD officials, following multiple meetings throughout 2005 with members of CCAFF and representatives of CNB, acknowledged that under the Joint Use Agreement, NMUSD is responsible for replastering the pool, repainting of interior & exterior of buildings, repairing /replacing heat exchangers, & general facility maintenance & repairs. On June 27, 2006, the Newport Beach City Council approved a challenge pledge of $290,000 for its 2006 -2007 budget to cover a portion of the cost of the project. On August 22, 2006, NMUSD authorized replastering of the pool and various other required repairs to the pool deck, deck drainage system, and other similar maintenance items, and allocated $250,000 from the 2006 -07 budget to pay for the approved work. NMUSD staff was also directed to cooperate with CCAFF in connection with the planning of the project. Action Plan To date, CCAFF has obtained architectural concept designs reflecting the proposed updating and upgrading of MBAC. The designs, prepared pro bono by an architect with a child on CDMHS aquatics teams, were developed through the collaborative efforts of representatives of the CNB, NMUSD, CDMHS administration and aquatics coaching staffs, and members of the Newport Beach Aquatics community. CCAFF has also confirmed conceptual support for the project from the various Interested parties and user groups. As mentioned above, CNB approved a challenge pledge of $290,000 for its 2006 -2007 budget on June 27, 2006. NMUSD has budgeted $250,000 to pay for replastering the pool, repairs to the deck and drainage. CCAFF will seek contributions from major donors, and organize and undertake a community -based fund raising campaign to raise the remaining $800,000 -$1 million representing the communitys portion of the cost of the project. CCAFF's goal is to raise a substantial amount of money from the Newport Beach aquatics community by the end of 2006, and achieve its goals by June, 2007. CCAFF is ready to accept tax deductible pledges and donations by check or credit card. Simply click on the Donation and Pledge Form, print off and complete the form, and mail it with a check payable to CCAFF in the amount of your tax deductible donation. CCAFF works to implement the planning, construction and fund- raising needed to update and upgrade the Marian Bergeson Aquatics Center on the campus of Corona del Mar High School. This effort will require contributions from the City of Newport Beach, the Newport -Mesa Unified School District, and the community. From the day the facility opened in 1990, participation in aquatics activities has enjoyed explosive growth in Newport Beach. A flagship aquatics facility and a valuable community asset, Marian Bergeson Aquatics Center embodies Newport Beach's rich aquatics traditions, ranging from high school water polo and swim teams, to a wide range of community youth and adult aquatics programs. It has even served as a venue for many national and international aquatics competitions. Seventeen years have passed since construction was completed, and major maintenance work, updating, and upgrading are desperately needed to preserve and enhance this important community facility. It is estimated that project costs will exceed $1.3 million. Specific projects include: • replastering the pool and repairing the deck and deck drainage system • remodeling the office area to provide private work spaces for coaches and City staff • construction of new restrooms (including locker rooms and showers) . • installation of shade structures over the bleachers • installation of updated wiring, lighting, ventilation, and communications systems • replacing the score board The City of Newport Beach has approved a challenge grant, and the Newport -Mesa Unified School District has allocated funds for the effort. We are committed to raising the community's share of funds by the end of 2006 to get the project underway. An article which appeared in the Daily Pilot on November 16, 2006 is attached for your reference.
