RECOMMENDATION: That Council agrees to the sponsorship and a budget amendment transferring $75,000 from the unappropriated General Fund reserve to account 0310 -8080. DISCUSSION: John Wayne was undoubtedly the most well -known person to ever reside in Newport Beach. To honor his 100th birth date, the Newport Beach Film Festival and the Newport Beach Conference & Visitors Bureau are planning events to celebrate the centennial. Events will include the screening of a number of John Wayne's most celebrated films, in coordination with the Newport Beach Film Festival. A dinner at the Balboa Bay Club, including people who worked with John Wayne in the film industry, is also being planned. The publicity from these events is expected to receive wide spread media coverage. In order to help cover some of the expenses of "The Official John Wayne Centennial Celebration '3; the Executive Directors of the two organizations, Gregg Schwenk and Gary Sherwin, have asked the City to be an official sponsor of the celebration. The initial request was for $150,000; however, after further discussions with the City Manager, the request is now for $75,000. Based on the favorable publicity the City will receive and based on the effort being made for the celebratory events to be geared to local residents, the City Manager supports this request.
