Appointment of Environmental Quality Affairs Committee

RECOMMENDATION:
Confirm the Mayor's appointment of Kenneth Drellishak.
DISCUSSION:
Cris Trapp, Chairperson of the Environmental Quality Affairs Committee (EQAC), has
been appointed to the Parks, Beaches and Recreation Commission, and has resigned
from EQAC. Mayor Webb wishes to appoint Kenneth Drellishak as the new
Chairperson. Dr. Drellishak has been an at -large member of EQAC from District 1 for
two years, and has been a significant contributor to the review of several environmental
documents. He has an education and professional background in engineering and
technology, and has been vice president and president of the Balboa Peninsula Point
Association.

DR. KENNETH S. DRELLISHAK
LOCKHEED MARTIN CORPORATION
DIRECTOR OF TECHNOLOGY (RETIRED)
Dr. Drellishak was employed at Electro- Optical Systems in Pasadena and Pomona for over
thirty years. Starting as a research scientist involved in plasma physics and space
propulsion R&D, he moved through the organization holding numerous line and staff
positions. With the Loral acquisition from Xerox in 1983, he directed the formation and
operation of the new Electronic Combat Engineering and Programs organization where
ALQ -157 and Matador Infrared Countermeasures (IRCM) products were developed and
deployed. He was promoted to VP Business Development in 1990 and to VP Space
Systems in January 1992. In this capacity, Dr. Drellishak was responsible for development
and production of space - qualified instruments and electronics for DOD, NASA, SDIO and
commercial customers. Products included space microgravity research equipment (DPM),
space infrared sensors (MSTI) and space power systems for Cassini and Mars Pathfinder
NASA missions.
In 1995, Dr. Drellishak joined the Loral Corporate staff as Director of Technology
responsible for management and technical oversight of corporate funded activities at
several Loral Divisions in the areas of infrared focal planes, large -scale integrated circuits,
airborne reconnaissance and targeting devices and space systems. He continued this work
after the Lockheed Martin acquisition of Loral through his retirement in 1997.
He received his BME from the University of Detroit where he was a co -op student working
on chemical rocket performance analysis at NASA Lewis Research Center. He
subsequently received his MS and PhD degrees from Northwestern University in
Engineering Sciences as a Royal E. Cabell Fellow. After graduation, he served two years
of active duty with the U.S. Army Signal Corps doing research at NASA Ames Research
Center. He completed the University of Southern California Managerial Policy Institute and
served two years as Adjunct Professor of Engineering at Harvey Mudd College. In 1991 he
earned the Gold Knight of Management Award from the National Management Association
for his achievements as a professional manager.
Ken has served at VP and President of the Balboa Peninsula Point Association and is
currently serving on the board as City. Council Liaison. As an active member of EQAC, Ken
has contributed to a wide range of EQAC projects during the tenure of Robert Hawkins and
Cris Trapp.
Ken and his wife, Peggy, are past National Directors of the USC Alumni Association
Parents' Association having served in that role for three years. Peggy is a 1964 USC
Business School graduate. Daughter, Stacey graduated from USC. Eldest son, Stephen is
a University of Santa Clara graduate. Second son, Scott, is a computer science graduate
of UC Berkeley and is currently working on his Ph.D. in Linguistics at University of
Washington.
